The Innu Canoe Hunting Dog, one of the smaller native canines, was the perfect companion for waterfowl hunters in canoes, hence its name. This obedient hound would sit motionless at the rear of the canoe, waiting patiently for their cue. Once the hunter struck and knocked out his prey with a paddle, the dog dove into the water and fetched the limp bird.

The Tahltan Bear Dog, a breed indigenous to Canada, was the preferred choice for bear hunters. This canine, which was a spitz and pye-dog hybrid, weighed no more than 10-18 pounds on average, which meant they fit snugly into small satchels and were often carried around on the backs of bear hunters. When hunters happened upon animal tracks, they scooped out these scent dogs and instructed them to trace the elusive creature's steps. The dogs also played bait on occasion, distracting and creating diversions to hold bears in place until the hunters finally caught up with them.
