TIPS ON HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR DOG

Owners’ responsibilities

DOG OWNERS HAVE a legal responsibility under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 to protect their dog from pain, suffering, injury and disease. Checking your dog for signs of injury or illness every day, and making sure someone else does this if you are away, is the best way of ensuring that any health problems are spotted as early as possible, so they can be treated and managed. It’s important that owners consult a vet promptly if they suspect that their dog is in pain, ill or injured, and only use medicines that have been prescribed for their individual dog. Signs that a dog may be ill or in pain include: decreased appetite and weight loss; drinking more or less water than normal; being unwilling to exercise or play; showing uncharacteristic fear or aggression when approached.

Take your dog for a routine health check with your vet at least once each year and ask your vet for advice about things you can do to protect your dog’s health, such as vaccinations, neutering and treatments to control parasites (for example, fleas, mites and worms). Your vet can also give you advice about taking out pet insurance to ensure your dog is covered if they need veterinary treatment.

Dogs must wear a collar and tag when in a public place, and in April 2016 it became a legal requirement to have your dog microchipped in England and Wales. It applies to all dogs over the age of eight weeks and they need to be registered with an approved database such as Petlog (www.petlog.org.uk). As part of the new law, it’s also a requirement for owners to keep their registered details up to date. This includes if you move house or change your telephone number.
