Only after he was sure the old woman was asleep did he sneak off on his own, following a peculiar scraping sound coming from somewhere outside the tower. Despite knowing the creature Agatha might still remain in the area, Cereal and Princess Beggen-Ostra chose to bed down for the night at the base of the tower behind the large tree blocking the entrance. That way, they were safe from the elements and had a makeshift barrier for protection, though he doubted anything would come up that far on the mountainside, or anyone for that matter.
He awoke from a nightmare, the same one he had for several years since his parent’s death. In it, he stood by helplessly as his mother was tortured and then killed in front of him, followed by his father, and finally, when it was his turn, the mad King would smile a big toothy grin, throw him to the ground and pounce on him, plunging his massive sword through his chest. Spiders would pour out of the wound and crawl up him stomach, piling into his throat, choking him, tickling his tongue with their many legs.
He awoke violently thrashing, clawing at his own throat, only to find his blanket had made its way into his mouth in the night. He looked around stupidly, expecting the old woman to be staring at him disappointed or disconcerted, but instead, she slept deep with her back to him, her sword close at hand. Apparently the creature Agatha was of no concern for her, but he was not her, and he did not trust the creature, given that it was something which ate people.
He sat up, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. It was just before dawn, and light was beginning to drag its way over the horizon, reflecting off of clouds growing in the distance, creating a purple and blue facade. Still high on the step, he could admire the morning glow without a care as to what the day would bring. As long as he remained on the step, it was just him and the horizon. Something scrapped the outside of the tower. He could hear it coming through the walls. At first, he put it off as mountain rats, birds or some other secluded creature, but the sound was ceaseless and he was already up. He drank from his water skin, listening to the scraping continue unending.
Wide awake and curious, Cereal reattached his sword belt and left his pack with his food and water behind. He stepped quietly over the sleeping woman and rounded the knobby base of the tree and off to the left where the tower met the stone face. The scratching grew louder as he drew nearer. In the morning, when not even a bird chirped, he was surprised as to how loud the scratching sound was. The rounded exterior of the tower blocked his view from where the tower met the stone wall and he found himself touching the smooth surface in reassurance.
