OTTA HADN’T BROACHED the subject of Derri’s background for a few weeks. But after the conversations she had overhead in the Library that day she wanted to clarify a few things.

“What is the sharresh-idenru?”

Derri looked sorrowful as she combed his damp hair. “It is a monster.”

“Is it what attacked the Chandarin?”

Derri nodded mutely.

“Where does it come from?”

“The north.”

“What sort of monster is it?”

“The kind that the kaerlings breed.”

Otta could sense his reluctance to talk. “Who is Arnet?”

Derri gasped. “How do you know of her?”

“I overheard something today.”

“But that means Gar is here! We must leave!” He struggled to his feet.

Otta pushed him back down. “We can’t leave until the snow melts.”

“But he will find me!” Derri whispered. “And he’ll hurt me like he did my mother.”

“No he won’t,” Otta told him. “Erl and I will keep you safe. Who is Arnet?

“I’ve never met her.”

“Where is she?”

“No one knows. She was Gar’s sister and her disappearance turned him mad. That’s what mother told me. Please, I don’t want to talk about this any more.”

Otta finished combing his hair in silence, her thoughts whirling ceaselessly.
