Inside Half Breed’s tool shed, the dimly lit room was coming into focus. Bev Hartford slowly opened her eyes. She swallowed hard and realized her mouth had tape over it. Her head ached, and she tried to recall what had happened; it was still fuzzy. The combination of booze and her head injury made it hard for her to think. She scanned and knew she’d never seen this place before. She also knew that it didn’t look like anyplace she wanted to be.

The space wasn’t very large or entirely small either, and a single small burning lightbulb hanging from near the center of the room allowed her to somewhat see. Tools were strewn about on several tables that appeared to be attached to the walls. Even more were hanging from randomly placed hooks on the wall with a hefty assortment of knives. On one of the walls, a small buck stove seemed to be keeping it warm. Above that hung multiple animal hides from what appeared to be a bevy of deer and squirrel. One of the hides looked to be a large dog of some sort. She swallowed hard again. The floor was dirt with a few small patches of gravel tossed down to fill in holes. Gaps in the wooden walls shined in some light from the outside. It could have been the moon or a street lamp; she wasn’t really sure.

It didn’t take long for her to realize that she was in a bad situation. She jerked her arms which were tied above her head, and the rope pulled tight against her wrist and hurt as it dug deeper into her flesh. She could feel another rope stretch tight around her neck when she shifted. Her legs were freed, and she kicked wildly. She mumbled as loud as she could through her taped mouth, and then she realized all this was for naught. The ropes were too tight and looped several times around her arms. The rope around her neck was just tight enough to hurt, but she feared if she moved too much, she’d hang herself. It also dawned on her that the person that would likely hear her cries certainly wasn’t going to help her.

She hung from her bondage for what seemed like a long time but actually was only a few minutes. The night’s events started to slowly come back to her. She was at the bar for a couple of hours. She’d been drinking. Ellis… she went to see Ellis about that picture she found. The one the sheriff had left behind. That’s where it all got started. That’s how she ended up here.

From outside, she could hear whistling. That wasn’t from the wind, she thought. Someone was whistling a tune of some sort. She started to breathe heavier when one of the double doors on the front of the shed opened. Half Breed strolled in without even actually looking at her, and she remembered that he had been the one that knocked her in the side of the head.
