CHAPTER XVII

Billy

Winter really couldn’t come fast enough. The days were still getting longer, and it was about two weeks until summer solstice. I needed longer nights. I needed to cut and color my hair. I needed to find and follow Dietrich. I needed to find and confront Andrei. I needed to fe— I needed a lot of things.

Unfortunately, there would be no blood delivery this night. No graffiti artists, no gangbangers, no wayward tourists, no local curiosity seekers; nobody wandered through the abandoned railyard. I would have to hunt. The only other living thing I noticed was Blackfoot. She was perched on top of the boxcar. She blinked her approval as I gathered up my items — the MacBook Pro, still in the box; the burner cell phone; all the associated accessories; a little bit of cash — and began the two-hour trek to The City.

The police had found my parents’ car. I’d have bet money they had found Samantha in the Best Buy warehouse ladies’ room, and I wondered if they had found little Emily yet. As I trudged along Tunnel Avenue, I thought about the body count I was racking up. I headed for Walgreen’s on Portero.

Once inside the drugstore, I made a beeline for the haircare products. I picked out a box of blonde hair color and a pair of barber’s scissors. I also found a backpack that would suit my needs. This time, I actually paid for my items. I thought about asking for the restroom and doing my makeover right then and there, but I figured that would be the perfect way to cast suspicion. I locked myself in the ladies’ room at a nearby gas station. It almost made me throw up to cut off my beautiful, long, dark tresses. This lovely mane hadn’t been seriously hacked since middle school. Trims only for this Greek goddess.

The instructions on the box of hair color were easy enough to follow, and before long, I'm pretty sure I looked like Helen Slater in The Legend of Billie Jean. Fuck me, I watched a lot of bad 80's movies. Never in a million years did I ever think I’d be traipsing around San Francisco as a short-cropped blonde, let alone a short-cropped blonde vampire.

I put in at the nearest Starbucks and found a spot in the corner. Within minutes, I had the MacBook plugged in, the burner phone charging, and a latte for show. All the major newspaper and TV station websites had some sort of coverage of what I’d been doing. My exploits had even made the national news, especially the Livermore Boutique Massacre. I kept searching and searching. Andrei had killed again, this time in Monterrey. He was really trying to spread things out; either that, or he’d expanded his range to find his “flavor.”

First, up north near Mendocino, and now, south in Monterey. She was a stunner ... and Greek. Go figure. Anastasia Niklos, thirty-five, small business owner. He’d trussed her up, too. I made a mental note to download the digital version of the original Planet of the Apes.
