Back in charge of her body, Sara did a quick victory that left her breathless and dizzy. She was on her knees, Tanner gripping her tight. “Tanner—”
BAM! Sara was a prisoner in her head again and the hag was back in control of her body.
“You bitch!” the Dark Truth screamed. “How dare you!”
Sara spun around and, through the mirror, saw that she was walking. Shit, the hag was forcing her to move around the room, snaking between each of her Hounds. Sara walked over to the wall behind the couch and then she crawled… up. Using Sara’s Hound powers, the hag forced Sara to scale the wall like a spider. Sara stared at her reflection on the ceiling.
Yes, the ceiling was one big mirror.
The hag looked out through Sara’s eyes. She screamed at Sara’s painted face.
Sara hadn’t just dressed the part to get the Dark Truth’s attention. She’d painted the Dark Truth as her disguise. Sara’s face was split down the middle, one side gorgeous and perfect with long lashes, dramatic eyes, flawless skin, and supple lips. The other half of her face was a grotesque and twisted mangle of flesh and rot and gore.
Sara was banking on the hag finding them tonight. And this was her message. A way to make a connection.
The hag was furious. “You think you’re so clever, don’t you, little bitch?” The Dark Truth waved her hand. The mirror vanished.
When it disappeared, so did Sara’s insight to what was going on outside her head. She could no longer see what her pack was doing…
Snarling, she turned to face the Dark Truth. “We need your help. We need the truth, hag.”
“No one needs the truth, darling. They either covet or fear it.” The hag spat oozy blood onto the floor as she talked. “Lucifer sent you to ask who the traitor is, didn’t he?”
“No.”
The hag lashed out and cut Sara’s face. “I will not suffer a liar.”
Sara stood her ground. “He wants to know, yes. I do too. But that’s not why I’m here. I want another truth.”
“You want an awful lot for a woman who has more than most.”
Sara gulped back her rebuttal. The hag was pissed enough already, she didn’t want to make it worse. “Who killed me the second time?”
The Dark Truth smiled and it was cruel and disgusting. What few teeth she had were black, her tongue stuck out as she laughed loudly and there were green pustules all over it. “You never died. There, that is your truth.”
The hag turned to leave and Sara had a second to act. Jumping in front of the Dark Truth, she took one for the team and kissed her.
That’s right. Sara kissed the hag.
It was hard and fast and forced. It was also incredibly difficult to not puke in the process. The Dark Truth pushed Sara away with a screech. Her eyes went wild as she covered her mouth with a mangled hand.
Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale. Sara wasn’t going to lose this battle. Her bile would stay in her belly where it belonged.
