Alfie shut the door to the outside world, allowing Sebastian to venture into his home in front of him. He hung his coat on the wooden rack by the door next to his own while Sebastian gazed around the foyer, as though expecting Uncle Edgar to pop up at any moment.

“Tea?” Alfie offered. “Or I have something more enticing in my bedroom if you’re feeling adventurous.”

“I bet you do,” Sebastian grinned.

Alfie squeezed his eyes shut in embarrassment. “I walked right into that one.”

“Yes. You did. Tea is fine for now,” Sebastian said, relieving Alfie from having to follow-up the last remark.

Alfie led him into the kitchen. “Tea is Edgar’s favorite, so he’s bound to show himself at some point.”

He got the kettle brewing and opened the cupboard, aware this would be the first time he’d pulled out two cups in years.

“I didn’t think ghosts could eat or drink.” Sebastian leaned back against the counter; arms crossed. His nervous excitement radiated through his aura with such intensity Alfie could sense Sebastian’s exhilaration pushing into his own aura due to their proximity. The impression brought a pleasant tingle to Alfie’s skin.

“They can’t,” Alfie confirmed. “But that doesn’t stop them from watching others partake. Culinary voyeurs, spirits are.”

“So, what keeps him here besides vicarious methods of living? If you don’t mind my asking. You’ve mentioned ghosts have a tether to the world, their reason for staying connected. What’s your uncle’s tether? The house?”

“No. His tether is me,” Alfie answered.

The kettle whistled.

Sebastian might have questioned him further but Uncle Edgar, a translucent floating head and torso, came charging into the center of the room and halted once he noticed Sebastian.

“Oh! I didn’t know you’d brought a client home,” Uncle Edgar nearly apologized. Nearly, because he followed up the proclamation with, “Or is he one of your hobbies?”

Uncle Edgar narrowed his eyes on Sebastian.

“Neither. He’s...” Alfie had no idea how to describe him. “He’s Sebastian. The man you’ve screeched about every time he’s shown up on the doorstep.”

“He’s here?” Sebastian’s eyes widened in hopes he’d catch a glimpse of Edgar.

“And who is Sebastian?” Uncle Edgar asked, no longer assuming he’d interrupted anything which should be free of his scrutiny.

Alfie rolled his eyes. “Why don’t you ask him? Show yourself.”

Now that did throw Uncle Edgar for a loop. A rather literal one. He somersaulted midair in surprise. Edgar hadn’t shown himself to a guest in, well, ever.

Quite a bit of energy is required for a ghost to show themselves to people who aren’t natural mediums and since the energy bound to a ghost is finite, they tend to be reluctant to do so unless there's a good reason. Once they use up what little energy they have left, they’re forced to cross over to the World Beyond Sight for good. The exception being poltergeists, who retain an immense amount of energy due to them having been mediums, clairvoyants, or telekinetic in life.

“Do you really think that’s a good idea?” Uncle Edgar asked, trepidatious if Sebastian would be worth the effort.
