WHEN CHASE SAID heâd cooperate, he meant it. The next morning at breakfast he announced heâd be cutting back his hours at the restaurant, even taking some time off. What, he inquired of his daughter, would she like to do to make the summer special?
Maggie held her breath, hoping for the best.
She didnât get it.
âIâd like to spend it with Mama,â Blair snapped back.
Chase didnât blink an eye. âWhatâs your second choice?â
She glowered at him while poking viciously at her grapefruit. âSpend it at the Straight Arrow Ranch?â
A muscle jumped in Chaseâs jaw, but his pleasant expression never wavered. âWhatâs your third choice?â
âDaddy! Why canâtââ
âYou could go to Denver,â Maggie interjected, afraid to let Blair get too worked up. âThere are lots of neat things to do there, museums and botanical gardens. And mallsâIâm sure you enjoy shopping, donât you, Blair?â
Interest flickered in the girlâs eyes, then died. âDenverâs a hick town,â she said. âBeen there, done that.â
Maggieâs concerned gaze met Chaseâs above the girlâs drooping head. For an instant, she thought she saw de- spair. She wasnât going to let Blair get away with this! âHave you ever gone swimming in a hot spring?â she asked.
âA what?â
âA hot spring, water that comes out of the ground already hot.â
âLike at Yellowstone Park?â
Maggie nodded.
âWhy would I want to swim in some stupid little hole in the ground?â
Maggieâs mouth curved in a teasing smile. âWould you like to swim in the worldâs largest hot-springs pool?â
Blair looked intrigued in spite of herself. âThe worldâs largest? Iâll bet itâs the size of a hot tub.â
âWould you believe five hundred feet long?â
âYouâre putting me on,â Blair said.
âIâm not.â
âSounds dumb.â
âItâs not,â Maggie said. âItâs fun. Thereâs even a slide. And there are other things to do in Glenwood.â
âLike what?â
âLikeâ¦like the grave of Doc Holliday.â
âA grave!â Blair shuddered. âWasnât Doc Holliday a TV cowboy or something?â
Chase rolled his eyes. âI can see you need a little instruction about the wild and woolly West. Doc Holliday was a famous gunfighting dentist, Wyatt Earpâs pal. What do you say, shall we give it a go? Glenwoodâs only a little way from Aspen.â
Blairâs mouth turned down at the corners. She was going to say something rude and reject her fatherâs proposal, Maggie thought. A glance at Chase told her he was prepared for the worst.
But Blair surprised everybody. âOkayâ she agreed. âWhy not? As long as Maggie comes along.â
