WHEN CHASE SAID he’d cooperate, he meant it. The next morning at breakfast he announced he’d be cutting back his hours at the restaurant, even taking some time off. What, he inquired of his daughter, would she like to do to make the summer special?

Maggie held her breath, hoping for the best.

She didn’t get it.

“I’d like to spend it with Mama,” Blair snapped back.

Chase didn’t blink an eye. “What’s your second choice?”

She glowered at him while poking viciously at her grapefruit. “Spend it at the Straight Arrow Ranch?”

A muscle jumped in Chase’s jaw, but his pleasant expression never wavered. “What’s your third choice?”

“Daddy! Why can’t—”

“You could go to Denver,” Maggie interjected, afraid to let Blair get too worked up. “There are lots of neat things to do there, museums and botanical gardens. And malls—I’m sure you enjoy shopping, don’t you, Blair?”

Interest flickered in the girl’s eyes, then died. “Denver’s a hick town,” she said. “Been there, done that.”

Maggie’s concerned gaze met Chase’s above the girl’s drooping head. For an instant, she thought she saw de- spair. She wasn’t going to let Blair get away with this! “Have you ever gone swimming in a hot spring?” she asked.

“A what?”

“A hot spring, water that comes out of the ground already hot.”

“Like at Yellowstone Park?”

Maggie nodded.

“Why would I want to swim in some stupid little hole in the ground?”

Maggie’s mouth curved in a teasing smile. “Would you like to swim in the world’s largest hot-springs pool?”

Blair looked intrigued in spite of herself. “The world’s largest? I’ll bet it’s the size of a hot tub.”

“Would you believe five hundred feet long?”

“You’re putting me on,” Blair said.

“I’m not.”

“Sounds dumb.”

“It’s not,” Maggie said. “It’s fun. There’s even a slide. And there are other things to do in Glenwood.”

“Like what?”

“Like…like the grave of Doc Holliday.”

“A grave!” Blair shuddered. “Wasn’t Doc Holliday a TV cowboy or something?”

Chase rolled his eyes. “I can see you need a little instruction about the wild and woolly West. Doc Holliday was a famous gunfighting dentist, Wyatt Earp’s pal. What do you say, shall we give it a go? Glenwood’s only a little way from Aspen.”

Blair’s mouth turned down at the corners. She was going to say something rude and reject her father’s proposal, Maggie thought. A glance at Chase told her he was prepared for the worst.

But Blair surprised everybody. “Okay” she agreed. “Why not? As long as Maggie comes along.”
