âNo!â I fight against the thing holding me. I canât be here. This isnât real. I canât see this.
âItâs a dream, Mattie!â
Danâs shout is like a beacon on the darkest of nights, and I come out of the dream, seeking the safety of his arms. That wasnât just a dream.
That was a vision.
âEasy.â He untangles the cover from around me. âYouâre okay. It was just a dream.â
I throw myself at him, not ashamed of the tears. For once, I welcome them. What Iâd just seen was horrific, something I will never be able to un-see. Something no one should ever have to see.
âWhatâs wrong?â Calebâs sleepy voice only makes me cry harder. I donât know why, but it does.
âShe had a nightmare, I think.â Dan pulls me into his lap and rocks me. âItâs okay. Youâre safe now.â
The light flips on, and a bottle of water is shoved at me. âHere, drink this. Itâll help.â
My stomach heaves at the thought. âBathroom,â I whisper. âI need the bathroom.â
Without a word, Dan picks me up and runs to bathroom. Iâm barely on my knees in front of the toilet before Iâm throwing up. Every single thing Iâd eaten in the last couple hours comes back up. Thoughts of what had been in that toilet dance in front of me, and I start dry heaving.
âWhatâs wrong with her?â
âI knew I shouldnât have let her talk me into discharging herself from the hospital. Her headaches are back.â
âThe seizures.â
Dan nods miserably. âCome on, baby. Letâs get you cleaned up, and then weâre going back to the hospital.â
âIâ¦â
âNo buts this time. Youâre sick.â
I shake my head. âItâs not a headache. Itâsâ¦itâs what I dreamed about.â
Caleb squats beside me. âWhat did you dream about?â
âThe roogie,â I whisper and shove my fist in my mouth to keep from screaming. I want to shout, to scream, to cry at the horror of what Iâve just experienced.
âThe Rougarou?â
I nod.
âDoes she still have visions?â Caleb directs the question to Dan.
âI donât knowâ¦maybe? She hasnât said anything to me.â
Normally, Iâd get pissed at them for talking about me when Iâm right here, but I canât. This has to be some form of shock.
Caleb rubs my back when I lay my head on the toilet seat. Iâm drained. My nose wrinkles when the stench reaches me. Caleb reaches up and flushes it without me having to ask. He takes care of me as much as his brother does, but itâs what his family does. The Malones were given the job of protecting living reapers. Itâs hardwired into his DNA to protect me.
âIt was a vision.â
âWhat did you see?â Dan takes up residence on the other side of me.
âI think I saw the man who turned into the roogie. It was awful.â
âDid you see him change?â
âNo.â I curl up around the toilet. How to tell them what I saw?
âDid you see him feed?â Caleb asks quietly.
âNot exactly. I saw what was left of his family when he woke up. He didnât know. I felt everything.
