TORONTO

Everything on our way is slippery and dangerous, and the ice that still supports us has become thin: all of us feel the warm, uncanny breath of the thawing wind; where we still walk, soon no one will be able to walk.

(Friedrich Nietzsche)

More than a hundred years ago, Nietzsche predicted Global Warming. That tells you to pay attention to what he wrote and what Dr. V recommends. They know what they're talking about.

For instance, when I went for our usual tea this afternoon, Dr. V told me that what I saw up in Campbellton was called the Perseid Meteor Shower. She saw it herself, having gone to visit a hotel outside the city limits the way she does every year. Imagine: both of us were watching the Perseid Meteor Shower at the same time. Although it's kind of sad that both of us had to see it alone, when you think about it.

As we sipped our iced tea, the doctor brought out a book about the Shower. I read how it occurs every year on the night of August 11, when the Earth passes through a cosmic conveyor belt of planetary Debris that circles the sun at a skewed angle to the orbit of the Earth. August 11 is when the two orbits (i.e. Debris and Earth) collide, and some of the Debris is captured by the Earth's gravity. As it falls through the atmosphere, this Debris of rock is frictioned by the air and burns up, creating the streaks of light I saw in the sky. "Falling Star" is a misnomer. The correct term is usually meteorite, because the chunks of Debris are small.

Dr. V says that it is possible for a large-scale meteor to one day strike the planet with great Power. She says the meteor will not only destroy the place it lands, it will cause Mass Extinction. Tornadoes and firestorms will fly out of the crater, the wind an Inferno that will burn all life from Earth. She approved of me reading The Will to Power, and quoted Nietzsche:
