JONAH HAD NEVER felt anything as cold as the river during the Frontier Freeze. He was unsure how it was not ice at this temperature. The only thing keeping him from running back on shore was the woman holding his hand and the smile on her face.

“You going to go all the way, Dr. Drake?”

“All the way?”

They went in far enough that the water was almost to Holly’s hips. She let go of him and put both arms out to her sides. She closed her eyes and fell backward into the icy river. When she resurfaced, her dark hair looked almost black against her pale skin. She rose out of the water and he could hear her whole family screaming for her in the crowd.

“You are kidding yourself if you think I’m going to do that,” he said. “You’re turning blue. You win. Let’s get out of here.”

He took her by the hand again and they ran out of that death pool of hypothermia. Jonah was so cold that he could barely feel her hand in his, but he knew he didn’t want to let go.

“Man, that was cold,” she said with her teeth chattering.

Jonah pulled her closer and dropped her hand so he could wrap his arm around her and hold her against him. “I can’t believe you did that. Let’s get you in that heated tent and back into some dry clothes.”

“I can’t believe you made it. Your grandma said you had an emergency call last night. Aren’t you beyond tired right now?”

“There’s nothing like one-degree water to wake you up. I’m wide awake now.”

“I’m glad you made it,” she said, looking up at him like she meant it.

Jonah felt that tug. He wanted to cradle her wet face and kiss her slightly blue-tinted lips. When they had kissed the other night, he hadn’t wanted it to end. But the look on her face when they came apart had made him realize that he couldn’t push her or she was going to run.

“You did it!” Maisy appeared out of nowhere with a giant bath towel that she quickly wrapped around her sister.

The whole Hayward crowd had surrounded them. Jonah’s mom was the sole Drake. She held out a towel for him. “I brought this for your grandmother, but I think you need it more than she does.”

“Did you hear how loud everyone was when I came up out of the water?” Holly’s cousin Frank asked.

“I love that Randall carried Clarissa in and kept her dry. That was very sweet of you,” Maisy said.

Gran looked cold even though she wasn’t wet. “I started to panic and he just lifted me right off my feet.”

“That’s how a groom is supposed to treat his bride, isn’t it?” Randall gave her a kiss on the cheek.

“We should change out of these wet clothes,” Holly said, still shivering from head to toe. “We’ll meet you guys in the parking lot?”

“Breakfast at the Roadrunner in a half hour,” Will said. “Mom and I are going to go set up.
