Chapter Thirteen
Holiday racked her brain for a moment before replying. âWeâd love to, of course, but weâre not licensed caterers.â
âYou donât need to be a professional chef to sling some frosting.â Crispin chuckled at the thought. âYou can put on a uniform and blend right in.â
âEven if thatâs true, we really have to get going before the weather gets any worse. Itâs a long drive back to Maine and I have a bad track record with snowstorms.â She ran her hand through her hair. âBut have no fear, Iâm very good at logistics. I can scrounge up some replacements in the next hour or so.â
âNo.â The old manâs expression was serene and utterly certain. âIâd like you to do it.â
âBut . . .â Holiday started.
âWhy?â Alex finished.
âBecause Christmas is a time for reflection and giving.â Crispin smiled kindly at Alex. âWriting a check isnât a sacrifice for you. I can relate to thatâgiving you a piece of my great-grandfatherâs glasswork isnât any sacrifice to me. So Iâve made a point of giving something more treasured than moneyâtime and effort.â
Holiday wanted to point out that she was not obscenely rich and should therefore be excluded from this narrative, but she couldnât abandon her teammate. Not when the finish line was so close.
She glanced at the grandfather clock in the hallway. âWhat time does this shindig start?â
âCrafts and games begin promptly at six,â Crispin said.
She turned to Alex. âWhat do you think? Will we be able to drive all the way back to Alemos tonight?â
âI donât see that we have a choice.â
Crispin clapped his hands together. âNow youâre in the spirit!â
She turned to Crispin with schoolmarm sternness. âWe will give you two hours of cookie decorating. But thatâs it. We have miles to go before we sleep.â
âThe children will be thrilled,â he said.
âI promise you that weâll be the best cookie-decorating assistants that ever assisted.â She leveled her index finger at him. âBut weâre out of here at the stroke of eight oâclock and weâre taking your great-grandfatherâs star with us.â
âEight thirty?â he countered.
âOne hundred and twenty minutes. No more, no less.â She planted her hands on her hips. âEight sharp. Take it or leave it.â
He relented with a laugh. âYou drive a hard bargain, Miss Smith. Let me go share the good news with the catering team.â
When they were alone, Alex turned to her. âI canât believe this.â
âWhat else could I do?â she demanded. âWe have no other options and he knows it. Besides, what kind of monster says no to helping children at Christmas?â
Alex waved this away. âNo, I canât believe you forgot to ask the most important question.â
She frowned. âWhich is?â
âWhat are the uniforms like?â

âDonât say one word,â Alex warned as he stepped out of the powder room.
âWell, well, well.â Holiday tried and failed to hide her grin as she beheld Alex Sappierâtitan of tech, mountain man of Maine, coffee connoisseurârocking a Santa hat, green turtleneck and pants, and red-and-green-striped elf shoes with jingle bells dangling from the curly toes.
