Chapter 6: Procedures and Plans

Albert

“Hold on. Does Albert know about this?”

Albert snorted, and the two vamps guarding the front and back doors shook their heads. Albert had just emerged from the basement and entered the main structure of the building, but it was easy enough to hear Dennis’s strident tone even from a flight down. It sounded like Dennis had met Christine and James and had his pending surgical procedure explained to him.

“Of course,” Lester replied. “Like I just told you. We all have them. Even faction leaders. Even council members. There are no exceptions.”

“Least of all Dennis” was left unsaid but couldn’t have been more to the point.

“But you didn’t tell us this before.”

“Would it have made a difference? It’s never too late to change your mind.” There might have been a hint of hope in Lester’s tone. Albert tramped up the stairs, in no particular hurry to join this scene. It was never fun to witness people in pain. Helping Neil through the procedure had been particularly trying.

Judging by the pause, Dennis must have had to think about that one. “I just don’t like the idea of being tracked like I’m some kind of wildlife in a nature study.”

So unlike Neil, who’d understood the reasoning for it, but had balked, like most did, at the painful prospect of the procedure itself.

The sooner Dennis got over any thoughts he had of escape—whether of striking out on his own or taking them all down—the better off he’d be. If he continued to give off hints that he wasn’t willing to adapt to living within the vampires’ long-established rules, he wouldn’t last long.

Albert entered the upstairs apartment, finding everyone locked in a silent stare-down. The senior vamps would’ve heard him on the stairs, but Dennis and Cameron jumped.

“They’ve been fed?” Albert asked. Typically, that would go without saying to enhance the men’s recovery after this procedure. But considering the bad vibes Dennis had given off last night, and that he had obviously alienated these vamps in the process, who knew?

Lester’s brows knit. “They have.” He was usually much more empathetic than what he’d demonstrated dealing with Dennis, so maybe he didn’t like the implication that Albert suspected he might proceed without giving the men that boost. Well, good. Albert returned the nod.

Cameron worried his lip as his gaze flicked to Christine and James and their worktable, but only in a manner similar to how Neil had felt in the same situation. Dennis’s concern seemed more along the lines of being peeved because his plans had been derailed.

Albert sighed. He really should just end it here. The vamps looked as if they expected a signal from him at any moment. The situation called for it. And yet…

“Dennis, I don’t think you fully understand the implications of your behavior. You don’t really believe we can’t see through to the motives driving you, do you? Because you need to decide right now. Right fucking now. Decide if you want to live your life as
