As she lay there, having woken up from another restless dream, Debbie thought of Yannick again. He had made it possible for her to have this refuge, a home with his family, and acceptance from strangers. She had never believed it possible for a stranger to be so welcomed. Her experience in Shelleen had made her discount even the possibility and yet here in Kenyatta, that thought was proved to be untrue. Moreover, he had made it possible for her to write to her family, to reconnect with them so long lost and desperately missed, and then bring the same joy to all the other unhappy brides.
She lay there in the quiet dark, hearing her daughters breathe and wished there was a way to show her gratitude to him, to thank him for finding her, rescuing her, and bringing her to this safe harbor. Espe stirred and woke up, hungry, and Debbie automatically let her nurse as she thought of what she could do to say thank you to him, more than just words. Espe finished up, burped and fell back asleep, the sleep she would stay in for hours and Debbie let the answer come to her.
There was something she could give him, something he had not asked for, but she could offer it. Debbie wondered if he would refuse her. But if he did, that would be his free choice, she decided, just as it was her free choice to go to him, to lay with him.
She wondered if she would discover what Chika had meant in that conversation weeks ago. Debbie knew that some of the other brides in Shelleen, Alice in particular, had enjoyed what they did with their husbands, even if she, herself did not. Aldo had not seemed to care, but perhaps it was him, and not her who had been at fault. That was a thought she had never entertained before and she examined it with wondering curiosity.
Her decision made, she got up very quietly, as her daughters slept on undisturbed, Spotty lifting his head and then laying it back down, closed the woolen drapes tightly behind her, and slipped down the hallway to Yannickâs alcove.
Debbie stood there in the silent, dark hallway, feeling her heart pound in her chest, uncertain again and wondering if she really wanted to do this. She could still turn back, and no one would ever know.
She would do it, she decided, and Debbie climbed into Yannickâs alcove, pulling the drapes closed tightly behind her, shutting out the night and shutting herself in with him.
