CHAPTER THIRTEEN
SIX HOURS EARLIER
It was ten p.m., and Harry had left Ellen and Ava watching some true-life crime drama on the telly. He couldnât watch TV for too long, he found it excruciatingly boring, no matter what the programme.
And he didnât like being around Ava for too long. He could handle her in small doses but he found her⦠difficult. The relief he felt at being tucked away in his office with his beloved technology after being stuck in a room with Ava was immeasurable. Sullenness had radiated off her in great waves, her surliness permeating the air and seeping into his bones, his very soul.
Yes, Harry adored computers. Ever since the eighties, they had been a game changer. They had changed his life. They were his life. Everything from his work to his pleasure could be found on the infinite pages of the internet.
On the dark-web.
Harry worked, and he worked hard, but he had other interests, too. If Ellen ever found out what he spent a good chunk of his time doing in here, he couldnât even begin to imagine the fallout.
His life would effectively be over.
His fingers hovered over the keys, a small bead of sweat breaking out on his forehead. He hadnât looked for nearly two weeks. He had been good.
He stared at the binary code he was working on â a long stream of letters, numbers and symbols that would mean nothing to the average person but meant everything to Acton Software.
No one could programme a computer like Harry.
No one could surf the darknet like Harry. No one could navigate their way through the twisted, hellish corridors that comprised the evil that existed in such a place.
This was his domain. His world. This was a world he knew and understood, a world where he could show his true self.
Ignoring the guilt that weighed heavy on his heart, his fingers danced over the keyboard to the tune of his heartâs desire. The guilt would pass. It always did.
