Chapter 22

Damon

“What’s on the menu today?” I ask Rosalie as I join her in the employee lounge for lunch.

She always brings her lunch and I have begun to do the same so I can spend a little more time with her. These rare clandestine meetings are not cutting it for me, so I have taken to drastic measures to be in her company. Even though most of the team leave for lunch, we keep it professional, so no one suspects anything, but I have come to enjoy our little lunch chats just as much as our secret meetings. I take out my pre-made chicken and vegetables and pop it in the microwave.

“PB and J.” She says with a smile. “I was in dire need of sugar and carbs today.”

“Rough weekend?” I ask, noting that this is very out of Rosalie’s norm.

She is extremely strict about her diet and exercise routine and sugar and carbs are a big no-no for her. I have no idea why she deprives herself. Her body is a fucking marvel, with or without a few pounds difference.

“Yea.” She admits with a hesitant pause. “Julian turned 8. His party was on Saturday. It’s been a whirlwind of a weekend, to say the least.”

My heart aches when I learn I missed it. I guess most women wouldn’t invite their boss to their kid’s birthday, but damn, I could have at least given him something in private if she had told me.

“Ah. Tell him I said Happy Birthday.” I say as I take my food from the microwave and sit across from her at the table.

“You bet.” She says with a polite smile.

“Hi, I’m looking for Rosalie Garza. Is she in?”

A deep voice resonates down the hall and Rosalie pops her head up with wide eyes when she hears it. She immediately looks stricken. The jealousy that rages in my chest is unexpectedly intense.

Why the fuck is a man looking for Rosalie? We had a fucking agreement!

“Oh. Do you have an appointment? She is at lunch at the moment.” I hear Diane ask warily from the front desk.

“Rosalie? Who is that?” I whisper, on edge.

She shakes her head at me like she is afraid to speak, and from the look in her eyes, I realize she isn’t upset because she’s been caught, she is upset by this person in particular. My protective instincts ratchet up to the max.

“I wanted to surprise her actually, I’m an old friend. I’ll just wait here if you don’t mind.” He answers Diane in a flirty tone and my hackles raise.

Rosalie stands, her hands shaking as she waves them around in a silent no and she looks at me as if to say she needs help. The fact that she is motioning me for help both puts my jealousy at ease and makes my heart pound with pride.

“Oh, well I suppose that’s okay, it may be a while…”

Diane sounds like she is struggling with what to do, knowing Rosalie is back here, but she obviously doesn’t like the looks of him because she seems to be trying to cover for her.
