CHAPTER 20

I expected Asher to tell me I’d screwed up big-time. That if only I’d had better boyfriend skills—listening, communication, foresight, something—we wouldn’t be locked in a room without our dates. And now that Brooklyn and Anya were our last hope at escaping, which was not going to happen, my last chance at becoming a member of the Borrow a Boyfriend Club was over.

Asher just sighed. He sat on the concrete floor, up against the wall, and let his head fall back. Big chunks of whipped cream clung to his hair.

Not knowing what else to do, I joined him on the floor. The space was so cramped that our shoulders touched.

Asher glanced at them uncomfortably.

“Sorry,” I blurted. “Should I stand, or—?”

“You’re fine.”

A loud thud came from behind the door. Brooklyn and Anya yelped in the distance.

“I thought off-limits touching wasn’t allowed between members and borrowers,” I said.

“Huh?” Asher was untucking his baggy sweater from his belt so he could wipe his face. The hem was lifted toward his chin, revealing his bare stomach. Which was toned. Very toned. As he cleaned up, he accidentally knocked an elbow into my chest. “Sorry.”

My whole body tensed, and I flicked my gaze away. “You’re good. Um. Brooklyn touched you, like, a lot. And kissed you on the cheek when you first saw her.”

Asher stopped wiping his face and pulled his sweater back down, allowing the weird tension in my chest to dissipate. “Anya and Brooklyn are exceptions.”

“Why?”

“They’re together. A couple.”

“Okay.”

“And Brooklyn’s parents believe God forgives murderers and cheaters and liars as long as you’re straight.”

“Oh.”

“They borrow me and Lenny from time to time to keep Brooklyn’s parents from learning the truth. According to them, Brooklyn and I have been dating for over a year.”

“A year?” I asked. “But the thirty-dollar base rate existed then.”

“Twenty-nine ninety-nine.”

I chose to ignore that. “Sounds super expensive for them, right?”

He hesitated. “They’ve always been an under-the-table situation with me.”

I wasn’t expecting that. Asher had never charged Brooklyn and Anya because he felt…sympathy?

Sympathetic. Asher. Was that why he wasn’t asking borrowers to pay anymore too?

There was so much about him I didn’t understand. Like why he told the school to go screw themselves over outdoor lights. Or why he’d let me sail through so much of the membership process when more than seventy others had failed, only to reject me after I killed round three and when everyone else wanted me to join. I didn’t understand his logic behind anything.

I wanted him to make sense for one second.

It seemed like we were going to be stuck together for a while. Now was a convenient time to dig in. “Is the school ever going to install those outdoor lights?”

He smirked at the dusty floor, but it held bitterness. “You heard.”

“Overheard. You were in the office, and I sort of—”

“Spied on me?”

I started to form my rebuttal, but Asher kept going. “They told me they won’t consider the matter further because of my”—he lifted air quotes—“attitude. Whatever that means.”

“Well. You defiled the lawn.
