Chapter 29

“You look pretty. Where are you off to?” Caitlin’s father was sitting in the kitchen, drinking a bottled water and working on his laptop.

“Thanks. I’m off to Beth’s and then to Nancy’s party.”

“Oh, right. You mentioned that last night.” Her father had picked her up at the airport and they’d shared a pizza at home before she’d headed out to meet her friends.

“Are you working?” Her father was a workaholic but he usually took most of the weekends off.

“Just checking email. We have a new case, a big one. It’s been busier than ever.” He looked like he was going to add “with your mother gone,” but thought better of it. Caitlin guessed that he hadn’t hired any additional attorneys yet, as she knew he was hoping her mother might change her mind about going back there—about everything.

“Are you doing anything tonight?” He was still wearing his gym clothes.

“Linda and I are going to dinner and a movie. I’m sure I’ll be home before you, though. We can catch up later and you can tell me if the party was worth flying home for.” He grinned. “Of course, I’m thrilled that you’re here. Can’t wait until you’re back permanently. It’s been quiet here this summer.”

Caitlin felt both a bit sorry for him and annoyed at the same time. It was his fault they’d left.

“I have to run, Dad. I’ll see you later.”

When Caitlin reached Beth’s apartment, she knocked and Beth hollered for her to come in.

“I’m upstairs. I can’t decide what to wear. I need your help.”

Caitlin made her way upstairs. Beth lived in an old town house in the historic district of Charleston. It was a great location. They could walk to Nancy’s party, and if they wanted to they could stop at any of a dozen restaurants for a drink either before or after the party. Beth’s father owned the building and had given the town house to Beth and her husband, Spencer, as a wedding present. Spencer was out of town for the weekend with his college buddies for a golf trip. Caitlin liked Spencer, but she was glad he was away this weekend—it was nice to spend the time with Beth alone and catch up.

She walked into Beth’s bedroom. She was wearing a very pretty bright pink Lilly Pulitzer sleeveless dress and had two other dresses and a pair of jeans and a navy sweater on her bed. She turned to Caitlin and made a face.

“I’m not loving anything. What do you think?”

“You look gorgeous. Those other dresses are pretty, too. But the pink really flatters you.”

Beth smiled. “Okay, I’ll go with it then. Thank you! Let’s head downstairs. I just opened a bottle of pinot grigio. We can have a glass before we go.”

When they reached the kitchen, Beth poured them each a small glass of wine. They took them outside onto her balcony, which overlooked the busy street. It was fun to sit and watch people walk by as they sipped their wine and speculated about the night ahead.
