Digger lies on the corner mat doing sit-ups, more for vanity than for wrestling, when he sees the big blonde swimmer girl walk in. He’s seen her around and knows her name is Sadie Jorgenson, knows from the big article in the newspaper that she’s going to Sydney in September. They’ve never spoken before, though. She comes over and takes a mat from the pile beside him, gives him the vague nod you give to someone you recognize but don’t know, and moves ten feet away, laying her mat down next to the wall. She leans against the wall, reaching her arms high up it, pushing down with her head and upper body, sticking out her firm butt clad in red sweat shorts, SWIMMING emblazoned in bold yellow letters across the ass. Next she lifts her arms above her head, grabs an elbow and pulls it to the opposite ear. After performing this stretch a few times on each shoulder, she leaves her mat and moves into the weight area.

Digger pretends he has more sit-ups to do, lies back on the mat, and tries to think of something to say to her.

Here for a workout? Duh! Of course,she is. Too obvious.

How’s the training going? Nah, too familiar.

Hey, congratulations on qualifying. Nope, too late.

Hi, I’m Digger. Uh-huh, and …

Mind fixed on this dilemma, Digger feels a foot nudging his hip and looks up to the wide shoulders and blonde head looming above him.

“Wake-up call,” she smiles. “No sleeping in the weight room. Though I can sure say I know the feeling. I couldn’t decide whether to wake you up or tell you to shove over and make room.” She sits down next to him and extends her hand. “We’ve never actually met. I’m Sadie.”

Digger meets her hand, his eyes fixed on her wide, solid shoulders.
