Several hours later, Joan was lying in bed with Betty’s head on her chest, arm looped around her. They were naked, slightly sweaty, and they’d done a rather incomplete job of pulling the sheets up to cover themselves. It was getting late and Joan’s stomach had been growling for at least an hour, but she didn’t want to do anything that would break the spell of this moment, like suggesting they order something for delivery.

Instead, she kissed the top of Betty’s head. Her up-do was a disaster by now and Joan felt more than a little guilty for all the knots Betty would have to comb out later – they were all her fault. She nestled closer and said, “I’m glad you’re here, but today feels like a dream – promise you won’t disappear in the night.”

“I won’t,” Betty promised. “I’m happy right where I am.”

“Me too,” Joan said. After a long, ponderous silence, she decided she couldn’t keep from asking the question that had been nagging at her ever since Betty called on Sunday night to tell Joan her plan. “What made you come see me after all this time? Did something happen?”

“Not exactly,” Betty said.

“What does that mean?”

“I was at dinner with my folks,” Betty said. “I was thinking about the riots in New York, and about all the activism work you do with your friends out here, and my mom was busy trying to hook me up with some man she met at church. And it just hit me – I didn’t want to spend another day on the outside looking in.”

She sat up, clutching the sheets to her chest in a useless show of modesty that was probably more habitual than anything else. Joan tugged them down, revealing Betty’s perfect breasts with a playful little smile, then she said, “I know what you mean. I always felt that way growing up in Ann Arbor.”

“I tried to fit in,” Betty said. “When I was younger, I tried really hard but it just never worked.”

“That’s because you were trying to fit with the wrong people,” Joan said, sitting up beside her and giving her a kiss. “You fit just fine with me. And Helen and Carole, and it sounds like your brother loves you no matter what, and I’m sure you’ll like Tom if we have time for you to meet him while you’re here.”

Betty smiled. “I wish I knew there were people like you when I was in high school. I went on a lot of double dates with Ruthie and her boyfriend back then and I could never understand what I was missing. There was this one time when we went to the drive-in theater. Ruthie hooked me up with this guy from the football team and he was very handsy.”

“Bastard,” Joan said, a surge of jealousy rising in her. “He didn’t deserve you.”

“We were sitting in the front seat, and Ruthie and Joseph were in the back seat,” Betty went on. “And my date kept trying to kiss me, but I didn’t want to.
