‘You shoulda told me,’ Byrne said winding down the window to let the air-conditioning blast the hot air out.

‘I’m sorry. I assumed it wasn't relevant,’ Bozic said, adding, ‘He lives with his parents, has his own business, pays tax. He even bought Kerrie and Glenn their ute. Does that sound like the profile of a bloke who’d murder someone?’

Bozic looked at him, not with regret or shame, but with a kind of feisty solidarity. Firmstone’s mantra came to him: ‘ASSUME. When you assume, you make an ASS out of U and ME.’ He’d spare Bozic the sermon.

‘I'll decide what’s relevant. Anything like that is. What are his priors?’ Byrne said tersely.

‘Give me a tick.’ Bozic input Peady’s name into his Mobipol phone and waited for it to spit out the information. ‘Charged with offensive language in 2004. Fined thirty bucks. A 2010 conviction for receiving stolen goods. Received a bond. No conviction recorded. A 2016 conviction for receiving stolen goods. Eighteen months in the can and a five and a half grand fine.’

‘That’s relevant,’ Byrne said, wrestling the car back onto the highway.

Bozic continued with his testimonial. ‘He’s done some dumb shit, but he’s a good guy. Have some faith in humanity.’

‘Anything like that, I need to know.’

Bozic nodded.

Byrne’s heartbeat started to return to normal. ‘I think that his mother,’ Byrne remembered her name, ‘Kerrie is protective. No doubt about it. She'll cover his alibi.’ He went over the interview in his mind. ‘He’s hiding something, but the question is why? Did you see him look sideways when we asked him if that was the last time he saw Judd? Evasive. And again when we asked him if he was paid for the baits, he looked down. Not truthful,’ Byrne said.

‘Didn't notice.’

‘At other times, like when we asked him what Judd wanted the baits for, he had no problems looking us in the eye. My money is on Judd visiting him for another reason, not to get the baits. I’d bet my boots that visit wasn't the last time he saw Judd, either.’
