CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE
NOW
I stare at the silent receiver in my hand.
Did she actually cut the line?
âI was just calling 911,â I say. âIâm not trying to get anyone in trouble. Iâm just trying to help my friends.â
âIs that so?â Esther asks, her voice faded behind the door. âOr are you trying to make plans with Noah?â
Trying to make plans with Noah? I hang up the phone then, striding to the door to confront her. âNo, Iâm not trying to â¦â I say, opening the door. But the handle wonât budge. âEsther, you let me out right now. You hear me?â
âI told him you were trouble,â Esther says, with a querulous note. âI told him from the very moment I set eyes on you. Just like that Nicole girl.â
âOkay, listen,â I say to the door, adjusting my tone to convince her. âI promise you. This has nothing to do with your son. Iâm not trying to date Noah. At all. Iâm engaged already in fact. Remember?â
This is answered with an unconvinced snort.
âEsther,â I say, still trying to reason with her. âI was having a bachelorette party.â
âSo you say,â she answers.
Again, I turn the knob without success. âIâm not lying about my friends. They might be hurt.â I wait to see if she might take mercy on my plight, then hear something metallic knock against the door.
âNoah,â I scream, pounding on the door now. Obviously, she will not be swayed, and I canât waste any more time trying to convince her. âNoah!â
âYou shush right now,â she commands, just above a whisper. âYou wake him up and youâll be in some real trouble here.â
âNoah,â I yell louder, then body-slam the door, creaking the door frame. âNoah, help me please!â I kick the door now and notice the hinges loosening. Maybe I donât need anyone to let me out. I give the door another karate kick. Lainey could probably have kicked this open in two seconds. But Laineyâs not here.
âIâm warning you,â she growls.
I keep kicking and kicking, my chest sweating.
Hurried footsteps sound down the hall. âWhat the hell is going on?â
âShe locked me in here,â I scream, bashing the door.
âJesus,â he grumbles. âNot again.â
Not again?
âCome on, Mom. Put that thing away. Weâve been through this before. Itâs dangerous.â A tumbling sounds in the hallway. âMom, seriously,â he snaps. âYouâre going to hurt someone.â
âSheâs the seed of the devil, son,â she says, her voice strained with effort of fighting him off. âWe canât let her out of here.â
âMom, Jesus Christ. Stop. Please.â A scuffle emerges on the other side, the knob twisting back and forth. âYou need to stop this. Right now.â
âItâs for your own good,â she returns, her body knocking against the door in the invisible skirmish.
âIâm going to call Dr. Singh again,â he warns. âIs that what you want? This time, heâll start the medication. I promise you.â
âI wonât let her hurt you,â she cries. âYouâll start up again. I know it. And youâve worked so hard to be clean, son.â
I scoop up my backpack and step back a few paces.
