Chapter Thirteen

A light knock on his door awoke Jock along with Edie’s sweet, girlish voice saying, “Time to get up. If we don’t leave early, we’ll have to stand in the back of the church for the Easter service.”

Right. Easter. He took a quick shower and shaved close. Luckily, he’d brought along his custom-made suit and tailored shirt in the garment bag, thinking he’d need it for an interview with the Sinners hierarchy. Never suspected he’d be going to church. He straightened his tie, the one the salesman said had enough green to bring a pop of color to his eyes. He didn’t see it. Anyhow, not wanting to be late, he went to join the noisy chaos downstairs.

Platters of croissants, cinnamon buns, and Danish filled the dining room table along with fruit plates and pitchers of juice and milk. Two urns of coffee guaranteed no one would go without caffeine. Children swathed in large napkins to keep the stains off their finery dominated the large kitchen table.

He fetched his jar of Vegemite from the refrigerator and held it up. “Anyone want some? Willing to share. Okay, no takers.” He swore Lori’s eyes widened when she glanced at him. Good or bad?

“Word has gotten around,” she said as she wiped DJ’s face clean of cinnamon bun icing.

How he wanted to remove that blossom and kiss the side of her neck. For a moment, she was all he could see—that and a vision of future Easter celebrations with her as his wife and the children theirs—until Edie touched his elbow.

“I’ll try it again. I imagine Vegemite is an acquired taste like caviar. You look spectacular in a suit, by the way. Every woman in church will want an introduction.”

He put a spoonful of Vegemite on the corner of the plate she held out. “Now, we wouldn’t want that. I’ll stand in the back, perhaps.” His eyes still focused on Lori.

“You stand out wherever you are, Jock. I’m sure you know that,” Lori said.

“If you stand beside me, no one will see I’m there because you look so wonderful,” he answered.

Next to him, Edie sighed so hard he felt her breath on the hand that held the Vegemite.

“I wish someone would say that to me. I can tell Lori didn’t appreciate the compliment.”

“You’re very pretty today as well, Edie.” Pretty, but very young in a white and lacy dress that made her seem like a girl ready for her first communion. All she needed to complete the picture was a short veil on her curly, black hair. Not the compliment she wanted, of course. His gaze scanned over the little ones and their mothers. “I’m in a room full of lovely ladies.”

He hoped that would do. Again, Jock held up the Vegemite. “Must get my vitamins today.” He adjourned to the dining
