Chapter Twelve

We followed the other lycanthropes toward our seats, then Hannah went to join the magic users where they were sitting near the front at the left-hand side of the room. The room was large, with ceilings so high that the air felt chilled. Because there was only a small group of representatives from each council, the room seemed too big, as if each group was a tiny island dotted in a huge sea. It felt isolating, like a bad omen.

Once everyone was seated, Headmistress Wu moved to the front of the room. “As an objective party, I have been called to officiate,” she said. “Any objections should be voiced now.”

Nobody objected, though I did have questions. Like, how was she objective if she was Fey? Maybe she wasn’t, really; she didn’t look much like the others. It seemed a little rude to ask.

“Representatives from each council shall speak without interruption. Once everyone has spoken, I shall lead a discussion with regard to any action we may wish to take. As most of you know, this meeting has been called due to recent events surrounding the Lycanthrope and Magic Users’ Council. The Lycanthrope Council was abolished after the murder of its representatives and their replacement by Henry Hawthorne as Supreme Alpha. A few days ago, Henry Hawthorne, along with his ally, Daniel O’Connor, attacked and gained control of the Magic Users’ Council. There is intelligence which strongly suggests the two intend to gain not only a majority but complete control of the High Council with a view toward ruling over all non-human people.” She paused for a moment to let her words sink in, but nobody seemed very surprised. “The High Council has existed for more than a thousand years due to a fundamental belief that all beings have the right to representation. Should the council fall to these people, we will no longer have that right. We must now discuss and agree upon the best method to proceed from here. Who shall speak first?”

Nobody spoke for a while, then Althea got to her feet. Headmistress Wu nodded and stepped aside from the podium.

“I am Althea Wilde,” she said. “My mother was Alpha Wilde, and Henry Hawthorne is my cousin. I watched as the five alphas were slaughtered in front of us. I believe, and my people believe, that the only way to proceed is to remove the threat entirely.”

Several people from both the lycanthropy side and the magic user side broke into applause. The Fey whispered to each other, but the people from the Dark Council neither moved nor spoke.

“We believe that if Daniel O’Connor gains control of the High Council, he will use it to systematically destroy non-human people and subjugate humans with the power he has stolen from us. We believe his goal is to be the sole ruler of his species. He has conducted numerous tests and experiments on non-human peoples to further his aims. We believe he is responsible for creating the creatures known as the Others.
