Life Behind Bars
During my almost fifteen years as a correctional officer, I have encountered some of the most violent and sickest criminals known to man. I practically live inside the correctional walls in which I work. I spend more time locked up there than I do at home or with my family. I have witnessed some of the most horrific crimes, mental illness and dysfunction society has to offer. I have dealt with these inmates on a daily basis observing erratic, violent and irrational behaviors. I have dealt with murderers, rapists, cop killers, sex offenders, and serial killers. I have dealt with people like Jordan many times over. I have witnessed the addicts and the cons. It is my duty every shift to protect society from these violent and predatory inmates.
It is fascinating to observe and study the behaviors of certain inmates. I have learned the brain is complex, and a multitude of reasons can cause someone to lose their sanity. Some of these inmates have never lived normal lives, some dealing with violence and abuse since infancy or childhood. Some of these inmates do not know how to be truthful, how to function logically, or how to control their addictions, thoughts, actions or feelings.
The majority of inmates blame the world. They blame everyone else for their problems and addictions. Very few take responsibility for who they are, the choices they have made and for what they have become. They are very willing to share their stories, but the blame and anger surfaces. Inmates share about their horrible childhoods or the trauma they have suffered. Inmates share the darkest reasons as to why they became caught up in a criminal way of living, the gangs or why they became addicted to dope. They talk about the violence in their lives and the violence they have committed. They talk about how much they hate being in jail, but many of them know nothing but the recidivist ways that keep bringing them back time and time again. Some inmates were introduced when I started this job and have kept returning, still showing up for stints of time locked up. Some of these inmates have spent most of their lives locked up; more years on the inside than the years they have lived out in society. Some inmates function better with structure and being told what to do every day, and some inmates never had structure or discipline when they were out in society or growing up.
I have learned through the years that everyone has a story. We all do. I am sure at times some inmates who share their stories do embellish, but most do not when they explain the misfortunate their lives have entailed. Some inmates share their dysfunction, and cry and say they want to get out of the horrible situations they are in, but cannot find a way out. Many blame the drugs they are on or the abuse they endured as to why they hurt innocent people, and many do have a conscience and some show empathy.
