“Richard?”

There was no answer; the house was empty. In the hallway there was a large parcel, and Alice knew it was the flat-packed boxes she had ordered online so she could pack up their house because they were supposed to be leaving it in two weeks. Two weeks! And today she had suddenly learned that her partner of all these years was a thief.

Alice kicked off her shoes and hung up her jacket. She went into the kitchen and put the kettle on. Where was he? She needed to talk to him. Maybe even shout at him. Why had he taken that money? It didn’t make sense. Alice took her mobile phone out of her pocket and called him, but there was no answer.

The kettle boiled, but she felt sick and couldn’t face anything, not even tea.

What would he need £12,000 for? The boat had been paid for. The repairs bill was due, but they had plenty of money to pay for it. Didn’t they? And, of course, her mum’s inheritance was due to arrive soon. The solicitors had estimated the figure would be in the hundreds of thousands. Between them, Alice and Richard had plenty of money. So why? Why would he steal from the university? She just couldn’t make sense of it.

Alice felt awful. Her head was spinning with the news. She dialled again. Still no answer. She typed out a text:

Where are you? Call me.
