Chapter 17: A Brotherly Heart-to-Heart-On
âYOU, UH, wanna talk about it?â Rell asked as he drove Tyler back toward the apartment they still shared for the next few weeks.
Tyler turned on the radio, flipped through the stations, didnât like what was playing, and flipped it off again. It was the third time heâd gone through those motions.
âI canât help if you donât tell me what gives.â
âYou give,â Tyler muttered under his breath, and Rell laughed.
âWell, since I havenât seen you in two days, Iâm pretty sure Iâm not the problem. Xondee do something again? Or did you and Sondra get into it?â
âItâs nothing.â
Silence made time seem to stretch forever. They were driving the familiar highway home, but it was like Rell was going twenty-five miles per hour, and Tyler repeatedly glanced at the speedometer to make sure it wasnât true.
Even if heâd wanted to talk, which he did not, Tyler didnât know what to say. A woman had burst into Davidâs bedroom shouting gibberish. That might have been a little thing, if Tyler hadnât been bare-assed and pressed up against David when it happened. So there was that.
But whoever she was, she and David were close andâ¦.
Tyler humphed. Whatever. David didnât have to tell anyone about him. He could be his little gay secret.
âWow, you could shatter glass with that expression. Is it David?â
âWhat about David?â Tyler said suspiciously. âDavidâs no one. Davidâs barely a friend.â
âWhoa, jeez, okay.â
No, that wouldnât work. If Tyler kept David from Rell, then he couldnât be justified in being pissed at David for keeping him from whoever the asscrabs Diana was.
âHeâs coming to Susset for a Winter Sounds concert. Heâll probably meet Mom.â
âWhoa, what? Youâre bringing David home to meet Mom?â Rell asked, sounding alarmed.
âFriends meet each otherâs parents all the time.â
âYou literally just said âHeâs no one. Heâs barely a friend.ââ
Tyler didnât say anything, not knowing how to take the next step.
âAre you leading him on, Ty?â Rellâs voice was strangely kind but still firm. âYou know the guy likes you. I mean, youâd have to be blindâwhich you areâand stupidâwhich youâre notâto miss the fact he has a heart-on for you.â
âNo, I know. Did Crowley come home?â Tyler asked quietly, trying to change the subject.
âYeah. Things are better. I apologized. We made up.â
âWhich means you broke the springs in the couch bed.â
âPretty much.â Rell grinned. âBut you still havenât answered me, Ty,â Rell said. âAre you leading him on? Did you tell him youâre straight?â
Here it was. Tyler fiddled with his mustache, twisting the end like a supervillain. It had become a nervous habit, and he was seriously considering shaving the whole thing off. Beard, mustache, itâs a facial-hair fire saleâeverything must go!
âLike, he knows you only play gay on television, right? To make a point? I seriously donât want you to hurt the guy because of one of your statements.â
âShut up, Rell.â
âThe skinny jeans and the whole ironic everything and the taking a guy to prom? You do have a vibe about youâso you should make it clear.
