CHAPTER NINE

A couple of hours later, Jaelyn and I piled into Liberto’s rental car. The night air felt good and I stuck my arm out of the window as we rode, moving it like a wave. It was dark outside, so dark, in that way only the countryside can be dark. Darkness all around with only the stars for any light. The lights of the train tracks were even shut off at this point. I thought of Dennis, alone in the train, riding back to the village, looking out on these same pitch-black fields.

Was he thinking of me now? Or was he on the phone, talking to her, telling her all about his days in Spain? Was he pissed at me? Pissed that his piece on the side had screwed up his sure thing of getting laid tonight? Was he actually jealous, envious that I had chosen Liberto over him? Or was he asleep in his bed, oblivious to the fact that even now, hours later, in the unconquerable darkness of midnight, I was completely wrapped up in thoughts of him?

"You’re at the hotel, right?" Liberto asked Jaelyn. "I can drop you there."

"That's perfect," she said from the back seat.

"Actually, you can just drop us both in the Cuadrado de María. I'll walk Jae to her hotel. I could use some air."

I saw Jaelyn screw up her face in the rearview mirror.

"It’s cool, Zay,” Liberto said. “I can take you back to your place.” He licked his lips, adding, “Or wherever.”

"Sorry," I said, forcing a yawn. "I'm just really exhausted and we have the early shoot tomorrow and I drank too much, you know."

He gave me a look and sighed.

Liberto stopped the car by the square and reached over, taking my phone from my hand. He typed something and handed it back to me.

“There,” he said. “Now you have my number. So if you want to chill sometime, just hit me up.”

I smiled and nodded. “Definitely.”

He leaned over and kissed me gently on the cheek.

“Buenas noches, papi.”

As we watched his car pull away, Jaelyn punched my arm.

“What the hell was that?” she snapped.

“What?”

“Whaaat?” she mocked. “Sexy Deep Voice that just drove off, you know what. He was so into you, and you completely dissed him.”

We began the walk to her hotel.

“I know. I just— I’m tired. And I know I’m gonna be so hungover tomorrow.”

“Hungover, my ass. Hung up, more like.”

“Hung up?”

“Yep. Hung up.”

“What are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about that-hot-guy-from-couldn’t-stop-looking-at-you-all-night-long? Don’t play dumb, sis.”

“Oh, whatever,” I grumbled. “He is otherwise occupied.”

“What’s that mean?”

“He’s straight. Or something. And it’s stupid.”

“He told you that?”

“He told me he has a fiancée.”

“Okay, so it’s complicated. But that doesn’t mean he’s not into you. It couldn’t be more obvious.”

“His fiancée is a woman, Jae. So...”

“Don’t be that limited asshole, Zay. Bisexuals do exist. Don’t negate their experiences just because they don’t fit into your narrow binary.”

I gave her a look and she returned it, lips pursed.

“Okay, fine, you’re right,” I said. “Don’t get all Tumblr Generation on me.
