Fargo stripped off his clothes, washed up from a basin that was on the small table in the hotel room, and stretched out on the bed. It was a warm night, so he lay on top of the covers, rather than under them. A faint breeze came in through the window.
The Colt was under his pillow tonight, even closer to hand than usual. As he lay there letting drowsiness steal over him, Fargo thought about the two gunmen who had gotten away.
Both men were wounded fairly seriously; he was sure of that. It was possible they had ridden off only to topple from their horses and die not long after they were out of sight.
But it was also feasible that they had survived and gotten help somewhere else. There were quite a few farms in the area, and Texans prided themselves on their hospitality. A couple of wounded men would be taken care of, if at all possible.
In that case, Fargo was confident that they would get word to Big Nate Pryor that their mission to stop Vance Forrestal had failed. And as soon as that knowledge reached Pryor, he would send out more men to waylay them. It was likely that danger would dog their trail all the way to San Antonio, Fargo thought.
He was half asleep when the soft knock sounded on his door. Instantly, he was awake, and his hand slipped under the pillow to close around the butt of the Colt. He swung his legs out of bed and stood up. Silently, he went to the door.
He said nothing. Calling out in answer to a knock like that might be a good way of getting a load of buckshot blasted right through the door. He listened intently, and after a moment he heard Roxanne call quietly, âSkye? Skye, are you awake?â
He couldnât detect any strain in her voice, so he didnât think anybody had a gun to her head, forcing her to knock on his door. Still, he was cautious. He turned the knob and stepped quickly to the side as he opened the door.
âDonât worry,â she said with amusement in her voice. âIâm alone.â
âCanât be too careful,â Fargo said.
âYou can see Iâm not hiding anything,â Roxanne said as she stood there in the doorway, silhouetted by the light from the lamp at the end of the corridor.
That light poured through the thin gown she wore and revealed the clean, smooth lines of her body. She stepped into the room after a moment, and Fargo swung the door shut behind them. Now the only light came through the window from the street outside.
âYou expected me, didnât you?â Roxanne went on.
âI thought you might pay me a visit,â Fargo said. âI was leaving it up to you, though.â
She moved closer, a pale shape in the dim light.
âI couldnât stay away. Not after last night, and not after the way you risked your life to rescue me today.â
âYou wouldnât have been in danger if it hadnât been for Vance and me,â Fargo pointed out.
