Regaining consciousness, Andy realized he was lying on a cot in the jail. He raised a hand to the place where his head throbbed most and felt a thick bandage. Blinking, he recognized the doctor leaning over him.
âDonât make any sudden moves,â the physician warned. âYour brain may be like scrambled eggs after the blows you took.â
Daggettâs coarse voice penetrated Andyâs pain. âI doubt that. There couldnât be more than a spoonful.â
Andy struggled to remember what had happened. It came back to him in fragments. âThey didnât let us get very far.â
Daggett said, âThey were layinâ for you.â
âBut we didnât tell anybody.â
âThis is a tough town to keep a secret in.â
Andy knew but had to ask anyway. âWhat about Bigelow?â
âHeâs about the deadest man you ever saw.â
Andy felt crushed by the heavy weight of failure.
Daggett said, âThe minute you found out who he was, he was a danger to the others. They figured heâd break. What they did to him and to Callender is a warninâ to anybody else who might know more than is good for him.â
Andy lamented, âItâll be extra hard now to get people to talk to us.â
The sheriff and his deputy came along in a while. Seymour said, âMe and Salty went over every inch of the ground out there. Never found even a cartridge shell.â
Daggett asked, âWhat about horse tracks?â
âTheyâre all over the place, and they all look about the same.â
Daggett said, âEven if we could find the right ones, theyâd probably lead us in a circle and scatter. Whoever shot Bigelow may never have left town.â
Andy said, âSo we have to suspect everybody we see?â
Daggett nodded. âIâve been doinâ that all along. As far as I know, Pickard, youâre the only honest man in town besides me, and Iâve even got some doubts about you.â A tentative smile flickered and was quickly gone.
Andy had difficulty in keeping his concentration. He said, âSoon as this headache lets up, Iâm ridinâ out to see August Hawkins. Iâll try to talk him into waitinâ a while on his fence. The mob may not warn him anymore. Theyâre liable to just shoot him.â
Dubious, the sheriff said, âHeâs a hardheaded man.â
âSo am I, when I have to be.â
Daggett said, âYeah, or theyâd have busted your skull like a watermelon.â
Andy raised up a little, then dropped back onto the pillow. He felt as if a blacksmith were using his head for an anvil. âAfter I talk to Hawkins, I think Iâll pay a visit to the Teals and the McIntoshes. They might let somethinâ drop.â
Daggett said, âThe Teal family came to town yesterday eveninâ, all but the old man. Theyâre still here. Iâll go talk to them.â
Andy blinked. âThey were here when Bigelow was shot?â
âYouâre always tellinâ me not to jump to conclusions. Lots of folks were in town last night.â
Andy said dryly, âI suppose youâll question Carrie.â
âI like to be thorough.â
âMaybe I ought to go help you.â
âI can handle this without help. You stay here and rest, or your brain is liable to go to clabber.
