CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“Nothing to be nervous over, Travis. Once they know you’re the real deal, they’ll be fine. Just don’t let them get the better of you.” Ella turned off the engine and got out of the car. “They’re normal people. I get that a lot of Wilsons under one roof can be a little intimidating.”

Travis straightened his collar and nodded. Poor man was terrified and she didn’t blame him.

The front door opened and Mama stared at them. She raced forward and grabbed them both for a hug. “I’m so glad you two are here. Don’t let anyone frighten you, Travis. They’re all overprotective of our girl here.”

“Understandable.” Travis hugged her mom and gave Ella a quick smile. “Thank you for your support and for not shutting the door in my face the other day.”

“Daddy was right. You two have to make up your own minds. Wouldn’t have got married in the first place if there wasn’t some kinda spark, although we’d hoped you would take your time and fall in love. Not like your folks.” She held a hand to her chest. “I’m sure Ella has told you about Jack and myself. Married after a couple of heady weeks of romance, and look at us now.” She blushed and glanced between the two of them. “Come on in and meet the rest of the family.” She grabbed Travis’s arm and dragged him inside. Ella smiled and followed, bracing herself for the inquisition.

“Ella, honey.” Grandpa was the first to reach for her when she stepped into the hall. Everyone was gathered in the front lounge.

“Grandpa. Good to see you looking better.” She hugged him and whispered in his ear, “Don’t be disappointed in me. Travis is a really good man.”

He hugged her back, his body trembling. “Honey, you got the right to choose the person you love. Don’t let anyone tell you different. Now introduce me to the lucky guy.”

“Sure thing.” She kept a hold of her grandfather’s arm and got her husband’s attention. His face had paled since they’d walked in and he was staring at her brothers like a deer in headlights. “Travis, this is Grandpa. Grandpa, Travis Read. My Husband.”

The room off the hall went silent and all eyes stared in their direction. Ella ignored them as her grandpa shook Travis’ hand and pulled him in for a quick hug. “Nice to meet you, son. Now I can see why Ella has been flitting between moping and trying to keep her chin up the last few months. You’re quite the catch.”

“Thank you, sir. I really appreciate that. And it’s Ella who’s the catch.” He slid his arm around her waist and pulled her close. She ignored the frown from Adam and Clark, two of the brothers Travis hadn’t yet met. Clay sat in front of the fire with a whiskey in his hand and Kate leaned against his chair. She raised her glass to Ella and Travis. At least she was on their side.

Daddy came forward and lifted his chin.
