CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

KYLE MCEWAN TRAILED TIM Morton into the late-afternoon San Diego sunlight and over to a vintage Cadillac Eldorado convertible. Strapped into the back seat was a custom surfboard painted a matching glossy shade of turquoise. McEwan took a closer look as he placed his bags next to the board. A sexy mermaid posed as Lady Liberty rode a wave of red, white, and blue stars and stripes resembling a furled American flag. He climbed into the buttery-soft cream-colored leather seats.

Morton fired up the engine with a powerful roar and goosed the accelerator proudly. “Three hundred ninety cubic inches and three hundred twenty-five horses of sheer power.”

There definitely are two sides to this guy, McEwan realized.

Beach Boys music blaring, fuzzy dice dangling, they left the naval air station.

Morton explained the surfboard and car. “After Calexico went south, Vince Hanratty’s people in DC marched over to my headquarters and demanded I be yanked from the investigation. The head of my agency is ex-FBI, so he caved and left me swinging in the wind. I was put on forced paid leave until they decide what to do with me. Figured I’d make it a vacation and head up to La Jolla after seeing you off. My director is going to shit a brick when he hears who overruled his spineless decision.” Morton tossed off the last line with a laugh.

“Sorry about that.” McEwan chuckled, then patted the dashboard. “Nice ride.”

“It’s a ’62 Eldorado Biarritz. Cadillac made fewer than 1,500 of them. I found it at an estate sale over in Julian. Hadn’t aged very gracefully for just thirty-three thousand miles.” Morton explained the painstaking frame-off restoration process.

“It’s quite a showpiece, Tim.”

“It is, but it’s more than that. It’s my tribute to the greatest man I’ve ever known. My dad mentioned more than once he wished he’d been able to keep his ragtop instead of trading it for the family station wagon.”

McEwan appreciated his new colleague’s multidimensional personality: away from work, down-to-earth and laid-back; at work, quietly confident, capable, focused and resourceful. McEwan often regretted having little life apart from his work. His job was his life.

“I’ll drop you off at my neighborhood coffee shop. I’ve got to run home and repack because my current wardrobe doesn’t fit Uncle Sam’s definition of business casual.” Morton chuckled. “As soon as I’m done, I’ll swing by and pick you up.”
