First-class cadet Henry Blake was surprised in midweek to find a note in his mailbox asking him to call at the apartment of General Pitcher's secretary on Saturday evening at six o'clock. The time interfered with the cadet's normal supper hour in the mess hall, but Hank regarded the summons as seriously as though coming from the superintendent himself, so he presented himself at Dorothy's apartment promptly.

He was startled when she answered his knock in a black, floor-length gown, her hair tumbling loosely around her shoulders. The musky odor of perftime was strong in the air, and the cadet felt somewhat giddy.

Dorothy welcomed him with an inviting smile. "Please come in, Hank, " she said, using his nickname.

"Thank you, ma'am," he replied stiffly.

"Not 'ma'am,' " she told him gently. "Just call me Dottie. " She took his uniform cap and cape and led him into the living room, where she had prepared a whiskey and soda.

Hank looked at the glass and hesitated. He wanted to tell her that he was unaccustomed to alcoholic beverages. Reminding himself, however, that this was the general's secretary, he steeled himself, picked up his glass, and after toasting her, took a sip.

"It occurred to me," Dottie said, crossing her legs in such a way that her skirt was pulled up so as to reveal her well-turned ankles and shapely legs, "that I asked you here at just the wrong time of day. Ordinarily you'd be at the mess hall right now, so perhaps you'll allow me to compensate by offering you supper."

Hank sat straight on the edge of his chair. "I—I wouldn't want to impose on you, ma'am—I mean, Dottie," he stammered.

"It's no imposition, I can assure you," she said smoothly. "We'll consider the matter settled. Is your drink all right?"

He nodded. "It's just fine, thank you." He won-
