Never did we question Claude’s authority, dubious though it was. Not once did we dismiss his diagnosis as the posturings of a chancer. At least, not out loud, and not to each other. He was telling us what we wanted to hear. That was enough for one day. I phoned Daniel. ‘I love you,’ I told him. I had to say it to someone.

‘I love you too,’ he responded without a second thought. I noted the quickness in his voice, the lack of fear. I immediately wanted to test it, to push my luck.

‘I love you,’ I said again, to see if it would spring back to me. It did, without dilution.

‘And I love you, my Irlandesa.’

That’s when I did start loving Daniel. Not when I said I did, but some moments later when he replied in kind. It was the last day of January. Winter was through.
