Chapter 8

For the second morning in a row, I awoke in Eden’s arms. This time was totally different, though. I didn’t have to sneak away while trying not to wake him. A big, goofy smile spread across my face as I settled in.

Sometime during the night, we’d moved from our spot in front of the fireplace to my bedroom. Outside, the rain was still coming down, but it was warm and cozy in my big, comfortable bed.

I wondered how Eden would react when he woke up, and when he raised an eyelid and saw me there, a grin just as goofy as mine spread across his face. He murmured, “Morning,” and kissed my forehead. Then he burrowed deeper under the covers and took me with him.

“Can we please stay in bed all day? This feels so good,” I said softly, as I held on to him.

“We can do anything you want.” That surprised me. He was usually so practical, but his answer was totally indulgent.

I smiled at him, and after a moment I said, “Okay, so there are three exceptions to staying in bed all day—food, coffee, and the bathroom, not in that order. I’ll be right back.” He chuckled as I tumbled out of bed.

After I used the facilities and brushed my teeth, I found a pair of pajama bottoms and pulled them on. Then I went into the kitchen and got a pot of coffee and a quick breakfast going. Eden joined me a couple of minutes later, dressed in a pair of my gym shorts.

While I finished up some eggs on the stovetop, he came up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist. It was such a simple act, but it felt like the best thing in the world.

Once we assembled some breakfast sandwiches and poured our coffee, we returned to the bedroom and ate propped up with a bunch of pillows. Then we stacked our dishes on one of the nightstands and stretched out on our sides facing each other.

Eden studied me closely as he lightly traced my features with a fingertip. He smiled when he reached the divot in the center of my upper lip. Mine was pretty pronounced, and he murmured, “I absolutely love your cupid’s bow.”

“My what?”

“This.” He lightly stroked the spot, and I grinned. “Your mouth is totally irresistible.”

He leaned in and kissed me. It was tender and undemanding, and it went on for a long time. I let myself get lost in it, and when it finally ended a little sigh of contentment slipped from me.

Eden gathered me into his arms, and as he held me he whispered, “I don’t ever want to let go.”

“Good. Then don’t.”

“You shouldn’t encourage me,” he said, as I tucked my head under his chin. “I feel ridiculously possessive of you. I’m like a caveman, ready to fight off any challengers with a club.”

“There are no challengers, Eden. I belong to you.”

“I think we’ve both gone off the deep end,” he joked. “We’ve been a couple for a day, and we’re already saying stuff like this.
