This is what Mei is thinking, sitting on her own bed, the phone slippery in her hands.

Is there, maybe, another way?

No. There isn’t.

She wipes her hands on the duvet cover. She spins the light on her bedside table, a revolving thing she used to have when she was a kid, with birds that moved over the walls and ceiling when the light was on. It doesn’t turn anymore, but she still finds something about it comforting.

She doesn’t know why she’s so daunted by a woman who bought her a light with revolving birds on it to celebrate Mei’s achievement of going three weeks without wetting the bed, and read her stories as the birds flew slowly around.

She wipes her hands again and calls her mum.
