When I think about those long sessions with Dave, I am reminded of the multifaceted nature of a producer’s role in the studio. You’re trying to coax the best performance you can out of an artist. To do that, the producer needs to be a part-time psychologist, coach, cheerleader, and musical director. I had a good handle on that because I’d been a recording artist, and a not very good one to boot. Actually, the best analogy I can give is to the famed director/producer Cecil B. DeMille. He’d been a mediocre stage performer early in his career, but once he began coaching actors about their on-camera performances, his particular talents really came to the fore, because he’d walked in their shoes. I felt the same way about my career and abilities when it came to working with musicians.

Accordingly, I knew that, as a producer, I had to constantly assess the artist’s state of mind. Maybe the artist is tired or hung over, or maybe he’s scared to death because he’s thinking about how this song might make or break his career. At that point, maybe it’s time to take a break, or maybe it’s time for me to sit with them in the room and help them get their head right.

Conversely, maybe a part isn’t coming together because the artist is nearing a breakthrough. Maybe they are sitting out in the studio, in the zone, inspired and working to improve a part of a song. Or they are thinking about how to explain what they want to do on a song to you, the producer. At that moment, my best move might be just to shut up, grab a cup of coffee, and let the artist work it out for a spell.
