Chapter Twenty-Four

Ava

The warm water of the shower sluices over my head and slips down my bare body. The apartment is mournfully empty without my three guys since there’s been no sign of Erritt. Every time I recall the way he left, my pulse flutters with anxiety.

Skye doesn’t say much, but he won’t let go of me. Even when I go to the bathroom, he steadies me as if I might collapse again at any moment. I barely managed to convince him I felt up to showering on my own today.

Well, I can’t blame him for being frightened.

It’s the worst luck to have a severe attack while Harper’s not here, and the guys have never seen me get arrhythmia before. But thanks to Vanrey, I pulled through, and besides a faint burn mark on my left breast, an ache all the way through my shoulder, and the monthlies squeezing my belly, I’m recovering pretty well. From the near-heart failure, anyway. Skye’s been faithfully keeping heat packs on my belly and holding his fingers in my sacral dimples, which we discovered really helps ease the ache. His strong hands on my lower back make me feel like he’s holding me together.

Thinking of Vanrey, I recall the way he cradled me close while he shocked my heart. My memory’s a little foggy, but he was so calm I felt safe despite the danger. I kinda want to see him again right now and take another look at those deep green eyes and see if the expression I remember is still there.

I flip the tap handles to shut off the water and steady myself against the tiles for a moment, eying the cracked ones. Someone played rough in here without me.

I wrap a towel around my body and another around my long dripping hair, twisting it up into a turban. When I open the door, I discover Rita standing in our living area.

“Oh, hey, Rita.”

The confused look on her pretty face matches a strange sense of wrongness that invades me. I glance around looking for the source and notice the door to Erritt’s office open, so I stride across, my heart leaping with expectation.

We’ve got so much to talk about, and I’m sure he’ll be worried about my condition. In fact, since Vanrey knew what happened with my heart, it’s really unsettling that Erritt hasn’t come to see me yet. The last time we fought, terrible words were said all around, and we need to work it out before this fight festers.

Stepping inside, I freeze. Erritt’s not here, and neither are any of his belongings. The hair on my arms prickles. It’s like all traces of Erritt have vanished.

“Where is he?” I swing back out into the kitchen and Rita mutely points to an envelope on the kitchen bench, my name spelled out in Erritt’s formal handwriting. I open it with trembling fingers to find a piece of card embossed with the royal number nine.
