âWait, so, she just stormed into the office?â Katie asked as she sat down on the kitchen countertop. As soon as I got to her house with Alex, I started cooking pasta for us and it was nearly done.
âYeahâ¦â I said. âItâs a little weird, right?â
âItâs completely weird,â she agreed. âDid anyone from the office call you?â
âNot yet,â I said. âBut itâs only been an hour.â
I had to admit, Iâd been nervous ever since that encounter with Joshâs mother. I didnât think I had done anything wrong, but she seemed really offended. Was I actually going to get in trouble? I wasnât really the kind of person who got into trouble. I was a model student and now I was a model teacher⦠that was kind of my thing.
âBabe, donât stress,â Katie told me. âWeâre two consenting adults. Weâve done nothing wrong. She canât get you in trouble just because sheâs homophobic.â
My eyes widened. I was so scared about whether or not Iâd really done anything wrong that this didnât even pop into my head as a possibility! âYou think thatâs what this is about? That sheâs homophobic?â
âWhat else could it be?â she asked. âYouâve done nothing wrong except date a woman and she clearly has a problem with it.â
âYeah, I guess that has to be what this is aboutâ¦â I said, feeling a little dejected. âWow. I was really hoping I wouldnât have to deal with this from any of my studentsâ parents.â
As bad as getting in trouble was for me, somebody discriminating against me because I was a lesbian definitely felt worse. Especially since it was one of my studentsâ mothers who adored me a week ago.
My phone started buzzing from the kitchen table and my mind went straight back to thinking about being in trouble. There were only two kind of calls I got: the first was a call from Katie, which obviously this wasnât, and the second was a call from my school. And I did not want to hear from the school right now.
âHere, Iâll finish this up,â Katie said, getting off the counter and stepping toward the stove. âYou just go answer that.â
I wouldâve rather kept cooking dinner than answer the phone, but I had to know what was going on.
Sure enough, it was the school on my caller ID. I recognized this particular extension as being from our principalâs office.
âHello?â I answered nervously.
âHello, Miss Andrews? Itâs Principal Byron.â
âOh, hello, what can I do for you?â I asked.
âIâm sorry to do this to you, but Iâm going to need you to come in about thirty minutes early tomorrow and meet me in my office. Is that possible?â
âYeah, sure,â I said, barely able to croak the words out with my anxiety rising. âCan I ask what weâd be meeting about?â
âJust⦠a situation we need to address. Weâll talk more tomorrow,â he responded.
âOkay, sure. Iâll see you then,â I said, trying very hard to sound friendly.
âSee you,â he replied before hanging up.
My heart sunk in my chest.
