CHARLIE GROANED as she opened the front door to her apartment. She was exhausted. She'd spent an hour and a half on the beach in blindingly hot sun with another patient having an asthma attack. It had been touch and go for a little while there, and she'd stayed even though the paramedics had arrived thirty minutes after she had.
The patient was fine now, on his way to hospital, and she was starving and tired and wanted nothing more than a big meal and a long nap.
âGod dammit!â
The sight of a tortoiseshell ball of fur curled up on the couch stopped her in her tracks. The cat opened one eye and then closed it again, ignoring her.
With a sigh of exasperation, Charlie noticed that she'd left the terrace door open to let the air in. The cat had obviously just made himself at home.
She looked around.
What were her choices here?
She was loathe to pick the animal up. It might scratch or bite, and cat scratches easily got infected.
In the end, she did the only thing she could do. She left it where it was while she made herself pasta. When she took her meal out onto the balcony, the cat followed her out. She'd just have to be careful to shut it out when she went back in.
There was plenty of time to think as she ate in the shade of the terrace.
She was playing with fire, she knew that much. Jaye wanted more than friends with benefits, but had said she could settle. Well, she'd see how that turned out. But she couldn't deny that they were a good match, at least physically.
Her thigh muscles burned with the memory of their encounter.
She felt more relaxed, calmer, she had avoided another panic attack. All good things. All reasons she should be sure that she'd made the right decision.
Opening up like that though... She'd said more than she'd meant to in the clinic. She should be more careful with her thoughts, with her feelings. There was no need for Jaye to know how afraid she was that she'd never have her old life back.
She would be more careful, she vowed, as she carried her plate back to the tiny kitchen. She'd guard her tongue.
This was fun, nothing more, and she didn't want the complication of making it any more than that.
Her phone beeped as she was drying off her plate. She picked it up, Raine. She grinned just as she saw the cat slinking through the curtains again.
âHey! You! Pssss!â
The cat stopped, stared at her, then seemed to shrug as it made its way back out to the terrace. Charlie shook her head and read Raine's message.
Get ready for a surprise!
Her stomach flipped. Oh God. What was Raine planning now?
