Chapter 22

His sermon in the saloon had not been well attended because it was tough to bring in a big crowd when a balloon was in town. He should have preached in the camp with the two balloonists.

After sundown, when the temperature might have dipped below ninety, and a wind kicked in, Callahan left the shade of his boudoir in Father Pete’s barn and walked around town. A horsefly could hardly find room to fit between the crowded hitching rails, and boisterous song, ribald laughter, and loud clinking of glasses rang out under and over the batwing doors.

Six o’clock, he told himself, is too early to preach in saloons. Make it later next time.

The professor had to be at Browne’s ranch by now, so the cowboys were buying their own drinks. The farmers had gone home, but that was typical of farmers. Early to bed, early to rise.

Continuing on toward the eastern road that had brought him to this town, he stopped again at the bullet-riddled sign.
