Chapter 25 - Harley

When I tell her everything…

My words start to come out all at once.

I trip over them and continue to get the story out as fast as possible.

“I didn’t know who he was at first. He would just sort of be there. At Starbucks. At the grocery store. At the bookstore. And then he stopped trying to hide in the shadows. He would just come up to me. At first, he was friendly and kind of awkward. We chatted a few times, but then he started to creep me out by just being all of these places where I was. Well, I stopped going outside that much. And one time, I had to make an emergency run to get something last minute. I thought for sure he wouldn’t be there, but he was. He walked up to me and said, ‘You’re the whore who wrote Tangled Up. Well, I’m onto you, bitch. Why the hell are you ignoring me?’”

That’s when I realized that he was Parker Huntington, the same guy who stalked me online.

That’s when everything made sense and I started looking for work exclusively online.

It didn’t pay as well as a regular job, but I couldn’t bear the thought of going around the city knowing that someone was out there watching me.

And I couldn’t bear to leave the city either.

I felt trapped.

Detective Richardson listens carefully, taking a few notes on her notepad.

“So, you were never an escort?” she asks.

“No.”

“I need you to know that it’s totally fine if you were. You won’t get in trouble. I just need to know the whole truth, Harley.”

Of course, she would think that.

Who else would write a sex blog?

But the truth is a lot less juicy than that, and actually a lot more pathetic.

“Please tell me, Harley.”

“It was all made up. I promise you that. I didn’t have any of those experiences. I just have a very active imagination.”

Detective Richardson nods her head, but doesn’t look convinced.

“Okay, fine. You want to know the truth?”

“Yes, of course.”

“I’ve never had any of those experiences because… I’m a virgin.”

She stares at me in disbelief.

In a city, where having sex on a first date is practically expected, I’m a unicorn.

And that’s not a good thing.

I shrug and wrap my arms around myself.

I feel so pathetic.

I’m almost twenty-six years old and I have the sexual maturity of a sixteen-year-old.

“Okay, I’m…” she stops herself from saying she’s ‘sorry’ and instead corrects herself to say, “I understand.”

“Everything I wrote about in there was made up. It was just for fun. And when people started reading it, it was exciting. I couldn’t wait to make up more stories with bigger stakes and escapades.”

“Is your blog still up?”

I shrug and nod.

I haven’t written anything new in about two years, when he first started threatening me.

I couldn’t really block him from reading it so I had to block myself.

I don't know if this was the right thing to do, but it felt right at the time.

Whenever I sat down at the computer, I felt his threats and presence looming over every word that I typed.
