I must have cried myself to sleep. I awaken with my eyes puffy and sore. Bloodshot with dark circles underneath. I stare across the hall at Smoke’s empty bed. I think I hate him. Maybe this was for the best. Next time I’ll know better. Guard my heart more. I do my morning ritual of washing my face and brushing my teeth. I get dressed and head downstairs to fix myself breakfast.

The house is quiet and empty. My brother is either in bed or didn’t come home last night either. I decide cereal is a safe bet for my stomach. My nerves are shot, and I can’t purge the image of Smoke with Shiloh out of my head.

How can I ever look him in the eyes after seeing that? Seeing him screw another woman.

The echo of my cell phone ringing carries down the stairs.

When I unlock the screen to check missed calls, that stupid video is still pulled up. Because I must hate myself more that I hate Smoke, I press play and rewatch the whole thing, repeating the part where he calls her babydoll more times than is healthy.

The missed call was from Sabrina.

I dial her back.

“About time. I need all the details.”

“No, you really don’t want to know. I’m an idiot, Brina. I wish you were here.”

“I could be. Jimmy will bring me to you, or we’ll come and pick you up.”

The gears in my head turn. “Today is the cookout. I could ask my brother if you guys can come.”

“Shh. Don’t let Jimmy hear you. No way. He’ll be throwing himself at their feet for a chance to prospect.”

“Okay. Maybe we can hangout one day next week.”

“What changed since last night?”

I go through the entire night with her, including what my brother told me and the video. Especially the messed up video.

“Excuse me. I’ve changed my mind. I want to come meet this asshole so I can wring his neck.” I laugh at how animated she sounds. I can picture her waving her arms all around.

“I love you.”

“I love you too, girl. What are you going to do?”

“I’m going to make him wish he were dead.”

“Thatta’ girl. Hell yeah. What are you going to wear?”

“No idea.”

“Make it hot. These are biker dudes and babes.”

“I don’t know how to be hot.”

“That’s what makes you hot.”

I roll my eyes even though she can’t see me.

“Make him cry.”

“I’ll do my best.”

The sound of a motorcycle pulling up has me ending the call.

I don’t want to see him.

Not yet.

I can’t face him after this.

Not now.

Maybe not ever.
