Chapter 14
âHeeyunaaaa!â Wyss shouted out again as I closed the door to the cottage behind me.
âSheâs busy,â I called out into the jungle, and then I looked through Jinxâs eyes.
Wyss and his group were on the other side of the orchard to my northeast, and because the door to the cottage faced south, he couldnât see me.
âWho speaks?â he shouted. âI donât recognize your voice.â
âIt doesnât matter who I am,â I said.
âCan we talk?â he asked. âDo I have permission to approach?â
I considered his question for half a second. If I told him to fuck off right now, he might just do that, but then he would probably come back later. I wanted to convince him to stop fucking with Heeyuna and her tribe, and I was going to have to talk to him to get that point across.
I was going to have to act like the most badass of all badass motherfuckers if I wanted this to work.
âIâll allow it,â I said, and my heart started to race in my chest like it was a horse fleeing a T-Rex.
I watched through Jinxâs eyes as the four of them walked south from the edge of the jungle. They went about twenty yards until they had rounded the clump of trees that obscured us, and then the group paused to look at me. We were about forty yards away, but my enhanced eyes could easily make out where each person was looking and the expressions on their face.
âGreetings,â Wyss said as he crossed his arms, and I noticed his eyes flash to the badge on my belt. âWe have not met before?â
âNope,â I said. âYou are Wyss.â
âYes. This is my woman, Veeraale. My friend Ohkall, and my friend Syson.â Wyss nodded at the ten-foot-tall blade fingers guy for Ohkall and the goat-centaur for Syson. âWhat is your name?â
âMy name doesnât matter,â I said as I leaned my head to the side and cracked my neck. âWhy are you here?â
âI saw a fire and wanted to make sure that my friends to the south were okay.â He smiled wide as he spoke, and I had to admit that the dude came off as pretty charming.
âThey are fine,â I stated. âYou can leave now.â
âBut how can I leave if I havenât made sure they are okay?â he asked, and I noticed his eyes drift down to my badge.
Actually, all four of them were looking at the shiny golden metal on my belt.
âBecause I told you to leave,â I snorted. âGo back to your little cave, Wyss. This is my tribe now, and I donât fuck around.â
âYour tribe?â He raised an eyebrow. âI wasnât aware that Heeyuna bowed to another man. Unless youâve killed her and taken over?â
I took a slow breath and tried to plan my next move. He kind of had control of this conversation because he kept asking the questions, so I decided that the only way I could turn this around is if I went on the offensive and said something a bit crazy.
