The pounding on the cabin door and windows continued through the night. Las Maquinas, the name given to them by the Mexicans, had the numbers to overwhelm us any time they wanted, but that wasn’t their M.O. Since they became organized, their tactic was to isolate small groups—“Criers” they called us—to terrorize, torture, and eventually kill. Carmen, Daggett, and I knew the risks we took coming here and the fate that awaited us if we were taken. We tracked the cell’s base of operations to this remote area deep in the forest of southwestern New Mexico. Now we were the hunted ones.

“Come out and play,” the voice called to the cabin in a drab monotone. Something struck the door with a loud thud that shook the wall. Footsteps—some slow, some running—circled on the deck around the cabin.

“They’re getting ready to rush us,” Daggett said. Faint sunlight crept into the room so I could see Daggett beside the door for the first time in hours. He was on the ready with a Louisville Slugger poised above his shoulder as if waiting for a fastball. I stood by the rear door with a fireplace poker. Carmen was squatted in a corner where she’d been most of the night staring at the floor, rocking with her knees pulled to her chest.
