Chapter Sixteen
Margot stared at Regina in a way that made Regina believe in and start to worry about spontaneous human combustion. Regina wondered how on earth sheâd managed to get herself into such a predicament and how Graceâs skin could feel so soft.
âSo, this is why you pushed me away,â Margot said knowingly. âYouâre sleeping with her.â
âWhat? No.â Regina stood up and looked from Margot to Grace and back in shock horror. âNo, of course Iâm not sleeping with Grace. Thereâs nothing between usâdonât be foolish, Margot.â
Margot gave a caustic laugh. âOh, sure. Iâm being foolish, when youâre in here, with your door closed and your assistant nowhere to be seen, a hand in her bra. Is this a midlife crisis? Some ridiculous desire to bed a young underwear model?â Margot sneered at Grace. âWellâ¦youngish.â
Regina felt her cheeks heat up with outrage and embarrassment. She couldnât look at Grace for fear of what she must think of Margotâs outburst and the tiny hint of truth that laced her words.
Grace jumped out of her chair. âIâll leave you two to talk,â she mumbled before Regina could say a word.
âWhy on earth did you say that?â Regina snapped at Margot.
Margot smirked. âWhich bit?â
âAll of it. Iâm not sleeping with her, but even if I was it wouldnât be because of a midlife crisis or some need toâ¦to prove something.â Regina flopped into her chair. She thought the statement said a lot more about Margot than it did her.
âWhat was she doing here then?â Margot folded her arms.
âWe were talking. Sheâs a friend. Nothing more.â Regina wasnât about to admit to the help Grace had been offering her with work.
Margot scoffed. âGirls like her are not friends with women like you.â
Regina rolled her eyes. âGrace is a woman. Sheâs in her thirties.â She paused as she caught on to Margotâs comment. âWhat do you mean women like me?â
Margot sighed as if preparing herself to try and explain a very simple concept to a small child. âYouâre predictable, Regina, with your quiet, simple, safe, and predictable life.â
âSo what?â
Margotâs expression softened slightly. âI say this with great affection, but youâre terribly dull. Which is fine, itâs something Iâve even grown to like. Itâs sweet. But itâs not a trait that famous and unfairly attractive people would enjoy.â
Regina started to open her mouth to issue a swift rebuttal but found she couldnât. It was true. She was dull. Sheâd always known it, and she herself had been surprised at Graceâs desire to spend any time with her.
âIf Grace is spending time with you,â Margot continued, âitâs probably for professional gain. Nothing more. Stay away from her.â
Regina didnât believe it. She knew honest friendship when she saw it. Margot wouldnât recognise it because she only ever chewed up and spat out everyone she ever met. Yes, Grace had wanted advice, but sheâd also given advice. And beyond that, theyâd talked, laughed, shared stories, and bonded.
âI donât want to stay away from her,â Regina said. âBut not for the reasons you think.
