He retreated to his hut with the book, glad of his decision to retain the appearance of a Jew. He had been afraid to shave, and to change his garments, lest the abbot think this a symbol of his desire to convert. Mordecai wanted knowledge at this point; and if this knowledge was at odds with what he had learned in the Talmud academy, he would be prepared to meditate on both sides of the argument. But this was hardly the same thing as wanting to accept the Christian Church.

Mordecai read Saint Augustine through the night. To succor himself against the possibility of being swayed by the writer's brilliance, he recalled the words of Rabbi Meir, who was able to learn much from a heretical teacher. "He found a pomegranate, and he ate the fruit, but cast the rind away." This is what Mordecai would do with Saint Augustine, with the abbot, with the Latin language.
