At home, Elise tried to think it through.
Sheâd been rash, selfish and immature, and sheâd hurt both of them, terribly. But perhaps it wasnât too late. Maybe there was a chance.
Her fingers hovered over the send button of a text message many times. Lydia had already disregarded her in-person attempts at reconciliation. Sheâd ignored gelato, for heavenâs sake. Why would she want Eliseâs pleady, grovelly text messages?
And now sheâd employed an ex to work with her in New York.
Elise left the message unsent.
âMake us a cup of tea, love?â said Lisette.
They were settling in for the evening. Eastenders reruns on the telly, and tea and chocolate before bed. Lisette already had a blanket over her lap. She felt the cold these days.
âIâm afraid I have some news that isnât going to cheer you up,â her mum said, gently, when she returned. âI signed with the real estate agent for the house in France. It will be listed on the market tomorrow.â
It nearly tipped Elise into tears. She loved that place and she knew her mumâs memories went back far further than her own. She knew Lisette wanted to see the place one more time before she died, and she tried to swallow her self-pity, because Lisette was clearly making the greater sacrifice.
âOh, darling,â Lisette said. âCome here. Itâs alright to cry.â
She held up her blanky and Elise slipped underneath it with her and they rested their heads together. Theyâd both run out of tears ages ago.
âMaybe no one will buy it,â Elise said, hopefully.
âMaybe,â agreed Lisette. âThere are hundreds of one euro houses for sale in Italy and Spain. They give them away for free in Japan. If someone wanted to buy a tumbledown shack in the middle of nowhere, surely theyâd grab one of those bargains.â
Elise sniffed. âMaybe we donât even need to worry. It might never sell.â
âWeâre going to need the money, though.â
They both sighed and sipped their tea.
âSilly, isnât it?â murmured Lisette, after a while. âWhat is money, in the end? Iâd like to die there, but I know itâs not possible. I have to sell the thing I love in order to have enough money to die with grace and to look after you when Iâm gone.â
âPlease donât talk like that, Mum. Iâve told you a million times, the money doesnât matter.â
âIt will. We need to be practical.â
âI wishââ began Elise, but there were so many things her heart ached for, she didnât know where to start.
âI know,â whispered Lisette.
