Chapter Eight
Bastion
By the end of the second week, Oliver had graduated from brushing Kibaâs coat to feeding her and mucking her stall. Of course, there were a few odds and ends he couldnât do yet, like lifting a bale of hay and dropping it into her pen, but just about everything else Iâd asked him to do, he was more than capable of.
Which made it even more difficult for me to avoid him. His shoulder was mostly healed. I couldnât use his injury as an excuse anymore for the way I felt about him. He didnât wince when he moved it, and as the days passed, he relaxed.
And while I still hadnât figured out how to ask him the questions that had been on my mind since he first got here, I couldnât turn down the opportunity to spend time with him. The kind of company youâd expect between a pair of good, platonic friends.
When he wasnât watching after Kiba, he was out on the property with me. I hadnât asked him to, and I guess it was so he wouldnât get bored, but when I started fixing the fence posts in one of the rings, he offered to help. And after seeing me reline the wire a few times, he took over so I could work on something else.
He was a fast learner. Eager, too. But deep down, I knew I had to get a replacement lined up, just in case he decided this life wasnât for him. Some folks stuck around long enough to get attached to one of the horses, but the hard work, long hours and less than desirable pay usually forced them off the property and into some other line of work.
No matter how hard I tried to keep my distance and to ignore the way Oliver looked at me from across the field, I knew Iâd miss him once he was gone. The thought of him leaving had forced a ball of lead into my stomach, and it had absolutely nothing to do with how helpful he was around the ranch. It was his company, his closeness, andâgod, you look amazing when you arenât wearing a shirtâthat left me so unsettled.
One of the first nights he was here, Iâd been so tempted to find any excuse to go into his room, if only to join him in whatever he was or wasnât doing. Sleeping. Staring at the ceiling. Jerking off.
Orion nosed my shoulder. Iâd apparently stopped brushing him and drifted off again. Thatâs becoming a serious problem. If looking at Oliver wasnât distracting me, my thoughts of him were.
I sighed, unhooked Orion from the crossties, then led him outside so he could stretch his legs. Once I was sure Oliver was still on the far side of the property with Kiba, I retreated back into the barn office and locked the door.
I pressed my back against one of the walls, and for the moment, could only close my eyes and try to take a handful of breaths.
